David Crohn Brands Consul
in Lebanon as Foe of Jews
Bitter
words of criticism
against John Faust, American
consul in Lebanon, were spoken
by David Crohn upon his re-
turn to Detroit last week.
Crohn is one of the 41 Ameri-
cans who were interned by the
Lebanese in Beirut last May
when the ship taking them to
Haifa docked at the Arab port.
He is now en route to Israel,
wbere he will attend school in
preparation for service with the
Israeli government.
Branding Faust as "violently
anti-Semitic and anti-Negro,"
Crohn said the consul at one
time stated that "there are no
rules against killing Jews here."
IGNORED PROTESTS
Faust, Crohn charged, added
"that it's too bad that 5,000,000
people can cause so much
trouble for 140,000,000 people."
According to Crohn, Faust,
standing idly by, ignored pro-
tests while Lebanese troops,
armed with sten guns, rum-
maged through American bag-
gage.
The Americans, Crohn said,
were taken to Baldeck, famous
resort village, where they were
quartered for six weeks along
with rich Lebanese Jews, vic-
Jerusale ► Is Still
Alizrachi 'Capital'
NEW YORK (WNS).— Leon
Gellman, national president of
Mizrachi, declared that the
World Mizrachi Organization
will maintain its headquarters
and center of activity in Jeru-
salem, regardless of the future
political disposition of the Holy
City.
Declaring that "no matter
what political status the United
Nations accords Jerusalem," the
Mizrachi president, who left this
week for the special session of
the World Zionist Actions Com-
mittee in Tel Aviv, stated that
"Jerusalem will forever remain
the heart of Israel."
For nearly half a century, he
said, "the World Mizrachi move-
ment has made Jerusalem the
center of its religious, cultural
and colonization activities; we
have no intention of moving
our world offices to any other
city in Israel."
tims of the government's op-
pressive rule.
Crohn revealed that no at-
tempt was made at first to feed
the Americans, adding that little
help could be received from the
guards without giving them
"graft."
The Detroiter expressed un-
bounded gratitude to the Jews
of Lebanon, "who brought them
food and clothing at the risk
of their lives."
'HOT POTATO'
Crohn believes that there
would have been no trouble if
U.S. officials had brought enough
pressure to bear. He said the
Lebanese consider the whole in-
cident as a "hot potato" and
wanted to be rid of it.
Not once during their impris-
onment did the U.S. minister
to Lebanon come to visit them.
Crohn said.
Crohn, 26-year-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. Lawrence Crohn of
9287 Wildemere avenue,' is a
graduate of the University of
Michigan and served as an in-
fantry captain in World War II,
suffering wounds in Normandy.
His father is former president
of the Zionist district.
This week, Jewish World
News Service disclosed that 32
of the 41 Americans are return-
ing to Israel. The other nine
"jumped ship" on the way home,
it reported.

Technique Speeds
Hebrew Learning
CINCINNATI (Special) — A
revolutionary system of study-
ing Hebrew which is expected to
speed and simplify the learning
process has been developed by
Dr. Abraham Franzblau of He-
brew Union College, the Nation-
al Jewish Post reported.
The new technique is being
tried out in Cincinnati and New
York. The child does not read
Hebrew words. English equiva-
lents are shown to him side by
side with the Hebrew.
Not until after the first year
or two of study does the child
learn to read and speak from
the Hebrew rather than the Eng-
lish.
