For the first time since its
birth in 1925, the Detroit Sec-
tion, National Council of Jewish
Women, has launched -a fund-
raising drive to aid overseas
survivors.
Originally established to meet
community needs, the group only
recently began to spread its ac-
tivities across the Atlantic.
On the home front, the group
was one of the first to see the
need for free lunches during
the depression. It -also started
a camp for working girls on
Lake Huron and set up a coun-
cil branch of the Jewish Center
in the Twelfth street area.
These projects have been
financed largely by dues and by
profits of the Resale Shop, which
amount(-(1 to $8,434 last year.
The council's move overseas
has esulted in the establishment
of homes in Athens and Paris
for displaced girls. A scholar-
ship fund brings 25 young wo-
men to this country each year
for advanced schooling.
In addition, $36,000 has been
granted to the Hebrew Univer-
sity's college of education.
