Let Zionists Merge!

The strongest and most influential Zionist
organization in America will convene this
'weekend to define its relationship to Israel
and to chart a revised organizational program
in consonance with the needs of the new
State.
This body calls itself the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America but actually it represents
only a little more than half of American Zi-
onists and only about five percent of the
Jews of America.
Labor Zionists, Mizrachi, Hadassah, Revi-
sionists and other groups also call themselves
American Zionists and, to be honest, bicker
incessantly and only nominally work together
for the good of the common objective—the
rebuilding of a National Jewish Home.

Altogether only about 10 percent of Amer-
ican .Jews are active members of Zionist or-
ganizations. We venture to say that because .
of the stirring historic events of the past
few months, the huge unaffiliated masses
would' actively participate in the labors of
the Zionist groups if there were a unified
Zionist organization to which they could be-
long without the partisanship, the wrangling,
the politics and the self-interest of the sep-
arate groups.
Zionism must live in America. Israel will
be in need of moral, political and economic
support from American Jews for a long time
to come. Zionist organizations must be in
existence to encourage that help and to keep
American Jews alert to their kinship to their
brethren in Israel.

We knew that we are not the first to sug-
gest this. What American 'Zionism needs to-
day is not "loyal opposition" within the ranks
of the ZOA, nor little parties of Zionists each
with t heir own visions of glory and their own
feelings of righteousnbss. What American
Jewry needs is a MERGER of all Zionist
groups into a single, solid Zionist organization
to be called American Friends of Israel or
some similar name.
The State is here. It will live on without
America, but it will be stronger with unified
American support. It is time to drop the sepa-
rate ideologies, the animosities, the disunity,
the self-seeking of the separate organizations.
Let the ZOA at its convention take the
first unselfish step towards unity, a happier
American Jewry and a stronger Israel. Let it
invite all Zionist groups to consolidate.

basis for admission and thus giving sanction
to the racial doctrines of Hitler.
"It discriminates in favor of the Baits
and thus against other Europeans among
whom the proportion of Catholics and Jews
is greater.
"One feature is so specifically discrimina-
tory against the Jewish minority that its in-
tent can scarcely be doubted. This is the pro-
vision which restricts eligibility to those who
arrived in the occupied zones before Dec. 22,
1945. Most Jews now in I)P camps arrived
a few months later than this."
It looks like the fight for a just I)P meas-
ure will have to start all over again.

action, working zealously and harmoniously

their activities here. We are happy to join
many friends in wishing them huge success
in these new undertakings.
The Detroit Chapter, National Council of
