Detroiters Off for LOA Parley

NEW YORK—With an ex-
pected attendance of 2,000 dele-
gates representing 650 districts
In 47 states and` the territory of
Hawaii, the 51ct annual conven-
tion of the Zionist Organization
of America will convene July
2-5 in Pittsburgh.
Detroit is represented by 20
delegates, four alternates and a
duzen observers. Morris M. Ja-
cobs, Detroit and regional presi-
dent, will be at their head.
Meeting for the first time since
the establishment of the Jewish

percentage of increase was
greater than that of all other
cities which conducted spring
drives, their average being 31
percent.
Keynote speakers were Arthur
Lourie, Israeli consul general in
New York, and Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, executive vice-chair-
man of the European program
of the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee.
Lourie lashed out at British
conniving over Palestine.
BRINK OF DISASTER
'Kevin--no longer wishes to

Lourie said, "but to amputate
it by slicing off the Negev and
other territory."
Lourie revealed that Israel
forces were on the brink of
disaster in recent weeks, and
that defeat in Jerusalem was
staved off by the last-minute ar-
rival of a small arms shipment
from the U.S.
"At this stage of uneasy
truce," the Israeli statesman
said, "Arab troops have been
held and in some places thrown
back—but pot subdued. Israel
is busy reorganizing, preparing
for any eventuality."
BLASTS IRGUN
Irgunists were blasted by
Lourie, who called them "dissi-
dents who ignore and flout the
authority of the government."
He charged that Irgun was fo-
menting civil war.
"The plight of the European
Jew is becoming worse each
day," Dr. Schwartz said. "Jews
in Berlin are sitting on a vol-
cano, and those behind the 'Iron
Curtain' have been pauperized
by their governments' policies
of nationalization."
Dr. Schwartz called the DP
measure recently signed "with
eluctance" by President Tru-
man as "the most shameful,
most anti-Semitic, most discrim-
inatory bill ever to be passed by
a Congress of the U.S."
