Story of the U. S. Colonel Who Died for Israel

By PHINEAS J. BIRON

DAVID (MICKEY) MARCUS, the
American colonel who died for
Israel, was a most amazing char-
acter. A Hemingway could have
written a classic about this West
Point graduate who became the
supreme commander of Israel's
Jerusalem army.
Mickey was a typical New York
politician who knew how to climb
up the success ladder. Until the
war he lived a conventional, steady.
P. J. Biron
suburban life. Then he suddenly
got the itch for adventure, enlisted, and made a
splendid record.
He knew. no Yiddish or Hebrew. As a matter of
fact, he hardly knew he was Jewish. But after he
visited liberated Dachau he changed almost over-

night. Started to read Jewish history, began to think
about Zionism.
When the clashes between Jews and Arabs be-
came serious he got mad. . . . Lust all his social
urbanity and grew hot under the collar.
"All anti-Semites from everywhere are joining
up with the Mufti's men—where the hell are the
American Jews?" he ranted in the fashionable New
York apartments he frequented. Then he packed a
suitcase and went to Palestine.
His West Point training was a big asset. He set
out to shape the Jewish underground fighters into a
modern army. He reorganized the Haganah general
staff.
He modernized whatever defense industry was
available. He ordered equipment from Europe and
the U.S. In other words, he took over.
All his ambitions for a political career in New
York evaporated. He felt in his element, planned to

live in Israel, hoped to become the Eisenhower of
the first Jewish State of modern tunes.
Mickey was a happy man right to the last second
of his life.

THE JERUSALEM Home and Training Center for
refugee girls, built and maintained by the Women's
League for Palestine, was bombed a few days before
the truce by Abdullah's Transjurdan Legion. A ref-
ugee girl and a Haganah boy were killed.
The presence of the Haganah fighter was no co-
incidence. Ever since the beginning of hostilities the
Jerusalem Home had played host to the Israeli sol-
diers, feeding and entertaining them.
Besides, the Home also served as headquarters for
the Hebrew section of the Palestine Broadcasting
Service.
This Jerusalem Home was opened while Rommel's

U.S. Gives In to Bevin on Advice of Arm

By NATHAN ZIPRIN

I ONDON AND Washington
have reached complete agree-
ment on Palestine policy and
the nature of the accord is most
discouraging. The State De-
partment has given 10 Downing
Street the green light, capitulat-
ing to Bevin's whims and Brit-
ish imperialistic interests in the
Middle East.
The story behind the capitula-
tion is the foulest in the history
of Braise intrigue. The plot
began with the secret arrival of
a high British military official
with high diplomatic connections
in Wishington.
After a number of talks with
the military clique in Washing.
ton word began spreading in
top-level military and diplomatic
circles that the unidentified
Briton had given "convincing
proof" that Israel's army had
shown "a surprising and unsus-
pected lighting ability" and
that the display of such power
constituted a threat not only to
Arab hegemony but to American
and British interests.

'CONQUERING ARMY'
THE SECRET REPORT paint-
ed a picture of military and eco-
nomic decay in the Arab states
and was coupled with a warn-
ing that Israel': army "is geared
to conquering' not only the
Arab-designated area in Pales-
tine but also chunks of territory
in the neighboring Arab states.
The thesis of the report was
that if Israel. emerges triumph-
ant on the field of battle demo-
cratic forces' would be let loose
in the Near East, precipitating
a movement sufficiently strong
to overtm•ow the men whose
retention in office is essential "if
we are to continue holding sway
in that strategic area of the
World."

VICTIM OF' BRITISH
DREW PEARSON believes
that David Marcus was killed by
British intelligence officials . . .
Rankin is at it again. The
Congressional Record of May 19
shows him to save said that "75
per cent of the Communist Par-
ty members in this country are
Yiddish" and that 60 per cent
of them were born abroad.
Rankin made only one mis-
take. He said his figures were
based ors FBI files. 1'6M:in's
figures were flatly denied by
F131 Drector J. Edgar Hoover.
Deeper searching brought a
letter from the House Un-Amer-
kan Committee denying the ex-

Caught red-handed, Rankin went

LIKE A DICTATOR
UN MEDIATOR Bernadotte is
behaving like a dictator. He is
Known to be pro-British. He
was responsible for the read-
mission of Franco's Spain into
the Internatiohal Red Cross.
Obviously UN decisions when
favorable to Jews are broken as
easily as the crust of pies. They
are rigidly enforced when
agreeable to the Arabs.
The British could never have
stationed officials in ports
throughout the world in order
to prevent Jews from going to
the state of Israel. They are
about to do so now with Berna-
dotte and a complacent UN.

SYNAGOGUE DESTROYED
THE HISTORY of the Hurva
Synagogue in Jerusalem, which
the Arabs deliberately destroyed,
dates back as far as the year
li01.
At that time a group of about
1,500 Jews from Poland reached
Jerusalem undet the leadership
and inspiration of the famous
scholar and cabalist Rabbi Yehu-
da Hachasid. His followers were
pious Jews with hoped to accel-
erate the (liming of Messiah
through prayer, ablution and
lasting.
Because a a Turkish edict bar-
sing the building of Synagogues,
Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid selected
the ruins of an old Synagogue
and transformed it into a place
of worship.
Hundreds of pleas were made
to the Turkish authorities to lift
the ban. But the Turks remained
adamant.
Finally the authorities agreed
to lift the ban . . . But it took
150 years for them to soften.
This was in the year 1856. And
the building of a Synagogue on
the ruins (hurva, in Hebrew)
where Yehuda Hachasid wor-
shipped began.

IT TOOK OVER eight years
to build the Synagogue, with

funds raised among Jews through-
out the ,world.
In England, where large sums
were raised, Queen Victoria was
among the most liberal donors.
The dedication of the Synagogue
in 1864 was a momentous event
in the religious life of the Jew-
ish community in Palestine.
Thousands of Jews from the
world over pilgrimaged to Jeru-
salem to witness the dedication
ceremony. And when the first
Holy Scroll was carried into the
Synagogue, the narrow streets
and alleys of Jerusalem were
jammed with thousands of danc-
ing and singing Jews and Arabs.
In time the area where the
Synagogue was located became
the periphery of Jerusalem's
largest Jewish institutions.
Now the Hurva Synagogue is
in Arab' hands and an edifice
which British royalty once helped
to build now lies in ruins
through weapons of destruction

supplied to the Arabs by Britain's
so-called socialist rulers.
If you ever thought the infa-
mous Streicher sheets exhausted
all the faith you were mistaken.
The heritage of filth has passed
to Britain's leading weekly "The
Nineteenth Century and After."
Reflecting no doubt Bevin's great
"love" for Jews, that publication
carried the following in its May
issue: "In an upper Galilee set-
tlement there is a stock farm for
human beings. Fine figures of
Jewish youths are imported and
breeding is accelerated. This
blatant method of race produc-
tion revolted us."

'AN OLD STORY'
AN AMERICAN woman re-
cently attended a function at the
U.S. Embassy in Paris. While
standing near the bar she heard
a woman remark: "If it depended
on my Ernie not a single dirty
Jew would remain in Palestine."

Plans for an institute of adult
studies are being framed by
Hebrew teachers here. The de-
cision to inaugurate a series of
classes will depend on the re-
sponse, it was indicated.
Persons interested are request-
ed to write to the Jewish Edu-
cational Institute, 2615 Taylor
avenue, or call TY. 5-3194.
Among courses planned are ad-
vanced studies in Bible, Talmud,
Jewish lore, Hebrew, Jewish
history and others depending on
the demand.
Hours will be arranged to suit
the students.
