The Voice of the
Man in the Street

Photos by JACK BIGELMAN

TIME: Sunday morning.

PLACE: Dexter and Davison.

QUESTION: Should Detroit Zion-
ists follow the lead of other
major cities and picket the
building housing the British
consulate here?

MRS. JACOB BERKOWITZ,
17158 Roselawn avenue, house-
wife.
From what I have read and
heard, the British arc just as
much the enemies of Israel as
are the Arabs.
The Jews can
get back at tke
Arabs by fight-
ing them. With
the British,
this can't be
done.
Therefore, I
am highly in
favor of picket-
ing the British
consulate pro-
vided it is done by leading Zion-
ist organizations. This is one of
the ways we can show our dis-
pleasure at what the British
are doing to ruin the new Jew-
ish State.

Something has to be done to
stop the British from helping the
Arabs. The British themselves
admit they are
giving money
to Transjordan
and that many
British soldiers
are fighting
with the Arabs
agaiast the
Jews.
Because of
this I am in
favor of De-
troit Jews
picketing the British consulate.
If enough sentiment is aroused
against the British in the U. S.,
maybe they will change their
ways.

MRS. MORRIS BOVITZ, 2959
Waverly avenue, housewife.
The British seem to be doing
everything in their power to
wreck the new Jewish State of
Israel.
If we in the
U. S. just sit
back and not
s a y anything,
they will keep
right on with
this policy. If
we speak up,
perhaps t h e
British will
stop helping
the Arabs.
Britain is in a weak position
now and depends on aid from
the U. S. If by picketing we
can arouse enough sentiment
against her, she might give the
Jews in Palestine at least an
even break.

MRS. LOUIS SILVER, 2704 Bur-
lingame avenue, housewife.
I don't know if it will do any
good to picket the British con-
sulate in Detroit, but outside of
a boycott thiS is
about the only
way for Jews
to show their
anger at what
the British are
doing to help
the Arabs and
to ruin Israel.
Picketing the
consulate here
probably won't
havp any groat
effect on the British, but if it is
done all over the country it
may be successful. Something
has to be done to make the
British stop helping the Arabs.

CHRONICLE

Cash Payments
of Pledges Urged

Organizations and individuals
in the Jewish community were
urged to send aid to Israel
through the chief channel for
such contributions, the Allied
Jewish. Campaign, in a statement
issued by Sidney Shevitz, chair-
man of the Zionist Emergency
Council of Detroit.
Shevitz emphasized that the
United Jewish Appeal is the on-
ly official American agency for
aid to Ilaganah, and in Detroit
the only way to contribute to
the United Jewish Appeal is
through the 1948 Allied Jewish
Campaign.
Groups and individuals were
asked to act in three ways, by
pledging to the Allied Jewish
Campaign, by increasing pledges
already made and by making
cash payments to provide im-
mediate funds for Israel.

The urgent need for cash is
underlined, the statement said,
by an additional loan for $1,000,-
000 made by the Jewish Welfare
Federation so it can rush cash
to Israel.
