KKK Takes On a New Guise in N. Y. State

By PHINEAS J, BIRON

THE DEATH OF the KKK, as claimed by several
too optimistic defense agencies, is slightly exag-
gerated. In New York State it is functioning under
other names.
Two of the organizations that
serve as substitutes for the KKK
have an aggregate membership of
close to 20,000. They are the
Dreamland Clubs and the Shore-
man Patrols. Their programs and
regulations are almost carbon
copies of those of the KKK, which
lost its charter in New York.

A JERUSALEM report by Mau-
P. J. Biron
rice Fagence to the Daily Herald
Or London on May 3 contained the following: "At
p.m. Iraqis using French 75's, began shelling

crowded Jewish suburbs in the north, where there
are several British billets. The Iraquis wear bronze
badges made in Cairo, Egypt, bearing the German
eagle and the swastika and the words: Deutsche
Ehre ist die Treue (German honor is faithfulness).
Every Iraqi I have seen weals one."

NOW THAT TILE State of Israel is established
you may expect an intensification of the opposition
to Emanuel Neumann's administration in the Zionist
Organization of America.
The opposition is Well organized and has the
support of several substantial businessmen and vet-
eran Zionist leaders throughout the country.
It held off its fire because it did not want to be
accused of harming the United American effort for
the Jewish State. Now, however, it will proceed with
the publication of a periodical, and will hold meet-
ings in preparation for its fight from the ZOA con-
vention floor.

BRITAIN AGAIN is defying a
UN decision. But this time. it
Is obstructing a decision which
was made with British assent—it
refuses to permit Jewish immi-
gration into Israel during the
truce period,.
The impdrient excuse is that
the ban is based on a British-
made interpretation of the Conn-
eil's decision. Under the :drcum-
stances Israel would be justified
K it renounced the truce since
Ms terms are being violated by
the British.
While the truce is on, Lon-
don and Washington will be
busy working on a plan to
further reduce the size of Is-
rael's 'tiny territory. The plan
envisages yielding of territory
by Israel in part of the Negev
and insistence on economic un-
ion with the Arab states.
Economic union is nothing but
a device to smuggle the federali-
sation plan into the partition
plan. The schemers plan to face
the UN with a proposal that the
Jewish State be called inde-
pendent, that, like Transjordan,
it have a flag of its own and a
representative in the UN, but
that it be chained to the Arab
litotes under a central authority.

TRIBUTE TO SILVER
FUTURE HISTORIANS will
have a problem trying to essay
the individual contribution of
Jewish leaders to the rise of Is-
rael. When the chapter is writ-
tea certainly one man will hold
a unique place—Dr. Abba Hillel
Silver.
Of course,. without Israel's
army fighting 'successfully in he-
roic battles no victory would be
possible. But Silver's obstinate
and herculean efforts, overcom-
ing obstacle after obstacle, never
wavering, always forging ahead,
unafraid while facing the hostile
Arab world, the conniving Brit-
kit empire and the duplicity of
Washington will be recolded in
Jewish history as one of its most
inspiring chapters.
Moshe Toff, who has been ap-
pointed head of the Latin-Ameri-
can division to the UN, is an
energetic Argentine Jew. He has

The name of the candidate selected to oppose
Neumann for the presidencey of the ZOA is a dark
secret. But we're willing to bet that his name begins
with the letter G and that he is a gentleman from
outside of New York State.

ANTI-SEMITISM is due for a rapid increase in
South Africa now that Gen. Smuts no longer heads
the government. The new prime minister, Daniel F.
Malen, has an "impressive record" of anti-Jewish
statements.
The new Nationalist government, which is ex-
pected to break its ties with the British empire, in-
cludes several notorious anti-Semites who publicly
expressed sympathy with the Nazis during World
War II.

coup ry on behalf of the Jewish
Agency. He combines logic and
conviction in his argumentation,
persistency and tact in his mul-
titudinous activities.
Friend and foe alike are admir-
ing the astuteness, brilliance and
diplomatic keenness of Aubrey

Certainly the Times knows, or
should know, that Irgun today
consists of hardly a thousand
men who are rapidly being ab-
sorved into Israel's army.
Irgun, as that newspaper must
be "aware, does not represent
the State of Israel. It might
well be that an irresponsible
individual made such a state-
ment.

The Times evidently is not
overlooking an opportunity to
smear Israel with the red taint.
Its Washington correspondent
was even worried that Truman
might make a favorable state-
ment about the Jewish State
during his political trip through
the country. Yet the same news-
paper conceded in one of its
editorials the same week that
the State of Israel is a reality.
No greater victory is conceiv-
able than the Times acknowl-
edgement.

Youngest delegate at the UN
and representative of the
youngest State in the world
is the double distinction held
by Aubrey S. Evan, 33, repre-
sentative of Israel at Lake
Success. Born in Capetown,
South Africa, Eban was edu-
cated at Cambridge Univer-
sity, England, where he was
graduated with first class hon-
ors and became a *faculty
member for research in Ara-
bic and Persian literature.

N. Y. TIMES TRICKS
WHAT IS THE New York
Times up to? This week it fo-
cused attention on an alleged
broadcast by Irgun Zvai Leumi
appealing to Russia for help. Its
military expert Hanson Baldwin,
whose experting in the last war
was not so expert, referred to
this matter in one of his col-
umns.
In the same issue the Times
carried an interview with Feisal
of Saudi Arabia in which his
opinion of the broadcast was
asked.
Also this week the same news-
paper sensationalized a claim by
the Christian Union in Palestine,
an admittedly pro-Arab body,
that Israeli forces had shelled
Christian religious and humani-
tarian institutions,

42 New Officers
Receive Bibles

NEW YORK—Twelve Jewish
midshipmen, including B. H.
Kleinman of Detroit, members
of this year's graduating class
at Annapolis, received from the
Jewish Welfare Board a copy
of the Bible inscribed with
their names.
Eleven Jewish cadets com-
missioned second lieutenants at
West Point and 19 Jewish
graduates of the U. S. Merchant
Marine Academy, commissioned
ensigns, also received the Bi-
bles.

DR. STEPHEN S. Wise, Louis
Lipsky and Robert Szold are
heading the opposition group
against Dr. Silver. The name is
"Progressive Zionism". It is
about to publish a weekly.
The political upset in South
Africa is no accident. It reflects
a reaction to the blundering of
the great democracies. The worst
man, from a Jewish point of
view, in the South African
Cabinet is Eric H. Luow.
Another one is Schoeman who
declared during the war that
"the whole future of Afrikaner-
dom is dependent on a German
victory". A comparatively mod-
erating influence in the Cabinet
is Finance Minister Havenga
who is in favor of cooperation
between races. In any event
here is another corner of the
world which will bear careful
watching by Jews.

THE SENATE of the United
States has become an instrument
in the hands of the bigots. This
is the meaning of its passage
of a DP bill whose evident in-
tent is to discriminate against
Jewish and Catholic victims of
Hitlerism. If the House passes
it Truman should throw it into
the waste basket. The bill as
it stands is as cynical as it is
anti-Semitic.
Non-war American cargoes on
British ships have been removed
by the Egyptians and the secret
has been kept so well that it
only leaked out this week.
Lebanon abducted 41 Ameri-
cans aboard an American ves-
sel and our Government behaved
as if it feared to provoke the
Lebanese. Now Egypt has the
impudence to seize American
material on British ships. What
next?
Will we allow American sov-
ereiinty, and the rights of
Americans, to be challenged in
order to placate the Arabs and
the oil interests?
