LEWIS 11. BROWN'S "A Re-
port on Germany" (Farrar and
Strauss) is an unsuccessful at-
tempt to decimate Henry Mor-
genthau's view on stripping Ger-
many of all war potentiality. No-
where in the volume is the word
"Jew" ever mentioned.
In their book "The Problem
of Germany," published by the
Council of Foreign Relations,
Hoyt Price and Carl E. Schorske
advocate Germany's reindus-
trialization. They speak of Ger-
many's cultural and spiritual de-
cay but not too much against
the background of what the
Germans did to the Jews.
Vera Michele Dean, in her in-
teresting book "The United
States and Russia," published by
the Harvard University Press,
makes the observation "it is also
true that since the war a trend
toward anti-Semitism has been
reported from Russia in spite of
drastic government measures
against racial discrimination."
In these troubled days, when
one must on occasion use really
strong language, it is good to
have around "The American
Thesaurus of Slang." The pub-
lishers, Thomas Y. Crowell Com-
pany, filled an urgent need.

SHOCKEN BOOKS is rapidly,
and justly, gaining the reputa-
Page Fifteen
Lion of publishing the finest
books op Jewish themes. One of
their most fascinating volumes is
"From the Land of Sheba," a
collection of tales by S. D. Goi-
tein on the Jews of Yemen. The
volume gives an insight into a
corner of Jewish life with which
few western Jews are familiar.
Rembrandt holds a unique
place among Jews. Not only be-
cause of his personal relations
with the Jews of his times and
with the Jews of the community
in which he created his master-
pieces but because of the amaz-
ing "Jewishness" of his Jewish
characters and Bible illustrations.
His Biblical illustrations are
so steeped in the tradition of
the Bible itself that one gets the
feeling as if they were drawn
by a Jew who lived in the Bibli-
cal days.
By publishing "Rembrandt: 32
Drawings for the Bible," in loose
form so that they may be indi-
vidually framed, Shocken Books
has rendered a distinct service
to the lovers of Rembrandt and
the Bible.
