;VP? President Orders Smear on Jews Over Air
Tells Aide Bartley C from to Keynote
to Ignore Citywide Rally of Histadrut
Palestine
G. A. Richards,•who heads
station WJR here and others
in Cleveland and Los Angeles,
ordered his newscasters to
smear Jews in their broad-
casts, according to sworn state-
ments by two former em-
ployees.
Newsmen were also told to
play down news on Palestine
which would "give aid and com-
fort to Jews and Communists",
the affidavits allege.
COUGIILIN STATION
Richard has often before been
accused of bigotry and .hate-
peddling. It was WJR that gave
both Fr. Coughlin and Gerald
L. K. Smith their opportunities
to broadcast their hate theories
over the air for . seyeral years.
Oscar Cohen, executive direc-
tor of the Jewish Community
Council, announced that his of-
flee has been trying to get a
statement from Jtichards but to
no avail.
Cohen said that he is in con-
sultation with the National Com-
munity Relations Advisory Coun-
cil on steps to bring the charges
before the Federal Communica-
tions Commission for investiga-
tion.
Readers of the Chronicle have
in recent weeks charged that at
least one commentator has been
making anti-Semitic statements
in an attempt to confuse the
partition issue. The Chronicle
has turned over the complaints
to the Jewish Community Coun-
cil which has- started an inves-
tigation.
EXPOSED BY BILLBOARD
The full story of Richards'
orders tb his employees to slant
the news according to his preju-
dices is told in the March 6
issue of Billboard, the amuse-
ment weekly.

JERUSALEM (Special) — A
Jewish Agency spokesman con-
firmed this week that Irgun Zvai- -
Leumi had agreed to come under
Jewish Agency military direc-
tion and end terrorist activities
against the British. Negotiations
for such a union have been go-
ing on for months.
The same source said that a
similar agreement with the Stern
group was in prospect but no
actual discussions had yet been
started.
The imminent Irgun Haganah
union is considered one of the
best pieces of news since the
partition decision. The agree-
ment reduces the threat of intra-
communal strife and strengthens
the Jewish armed forces in the
emergency.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Polish
Consul General Jan Galewicz de-
nied American press reports that
Jews in, Poland are no longer
permitted to emigrate from the
country. ,
He emphasized that certain
modifications have been made in
the procedure for issuing exit
passports, but said that they ap-
ply to Jews as well as to all
other citizens of Poland.
During the last three months
of 1947 more than 1,200 pass-
ports had been issued to Jews
in Poland for travel abroad, he
revealed.

cording to reliable information
received in England, Jewish lead-

disturbed by the changes in the
government there.

Threat to
Partition
LAKE SUCCESS (Special)
—The fate of partition and
of the Jewish State rests to-
day on the United States and
Soviet Russia. With China
and France they have until Mon-
day to reach a decision.
An exchange of charges in the
middle of the week between a
Russian spokesman and Senator
Austin, the United States repre-
sentative, discouraged those who
believe that the only chance for
approval of a Jewish State
hinges on Russian-American co-
operation.
BACK FEDERAL PLAN
Developments towards the end
of the week were as follows:
1. A high Russian source de-
clared that his country wants
to see partition through despite
some countries reluctance. While
Russia desires conciliation be-
tween Jews and Arabs, the
United States apparently is seek-
ing that conciliation under some
solution other than partition,
presumably a Federal state, ho
said.
2. Senator Austin said he re-
gretted the publication of the
Russian's remarks "tending to
prejudge" issues before conclu-
sion of big power consultations
on Palestine.
ARABS CONTACTED
3. A United States official an-
nounced that this country was
working actively to bring 'the
Arab Higher Committee into
consultations with the UN with
a view to persuading the Arabs
to accept partition.
4. Sir Alexander Cadogan of
Britain told the powers that the
UN would have to accept the
fact that "real fighting" was
imminent in Palestine.
Jewish immigration into Pal-
estine will be in the hands of
the Jews and the UN after May
15, he said. Britain expects
that the 30,000 Jews interned
in Cyprus be removed to Pal-
estine by Aug. 1.
RECOGNITION ASKED
5. The Jewish Agency asked
the UN to recognize a 32-man
Provisional Council of Govern-
ment to function as the Jewish
State.
6. U.S. Consul General Ma-
catee reported from Jerusalem
that the Arab Higher Commit-
tee had refused co-operation
with the UN Palestine Commis-
sion.
