More Help for Region
The establishment of the Michigan
Zionist Region . is a step in the right di-
rection. It acknowledges that the small
communities outside the metropolitan area
have been doing a good job and deserve
more than the desultory, hit or miss at-
tention they have been accorded hitherto.
It is also recognition of the fact that
the Detroit Zionist District has been ex-
panding and requires professional direction
of a high caliber.
We regret, however, that the city's
contributions and potential have not been
sufficiently assessed so as to merit the ap-
pointment of a full time professional di-
rector for the district alone. The task for
the district is a man-sized one and we
warn the responsible parties that Mr. Gott-
lieb, the promising and imaginative re-
gional head, will not be able to accomplish
the reforms and innovations the district
needs if he is to be permanently saddled
with the jobs of supervising the state and
parts of Ohio as well.
There is much work to be done here.
A spirit of enthusiasm and creativeness is
yet to be inculcated. There is much dead-
wood to be cut away. A program with
vitality and significance needs to be charted
Much of the inertia of the past can be
blamed on the lack of professional assist-
ance. Zionist headquarters must have
been aware of this when it made its de-
cision finally to send a paid director here.

been unpublicized because they have been
accomplished without fanfare and without
visions of glory. Mr. Elias performed
his acts of brotherhood and of good citizen-
ship by promoting interracial amity, by
reducing juvenile delinquency, by selling
war bonds and raising funds for the Red
Cross, all of these only with the thought
of being'useful to his fellowmen. •
We are grateful to the Junior Board of
Commerce for uncovering for us the name
and service of this sterling and noble mem-
ber of our community. To Elias Lewis,
we say: All Detroit is . proud of you.
