DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE Friday, Febivary 20, 1948 An Open Letter: Page Eleven Mizrachi.ASSPits Synagogue Gilt Promoted to 'General Demands Dr. Magnes' Resignation for Sabotaging Jewish State Plan Dear Editor: The flood of propaganda re- leased through our various newspapers and magazines the last week with regard to Pales- tine aims to liquidate not only a Jewish State, but the Jewish people. The editorials appearing in the Detroit Free Press and Life Magazine as well as the articles by feature writers like Russell Barnes are honeycombed with misleading statements and in- nocent-looking phrases. In effect, these articles lead an innocent and uninformed ....reader to believe that the par- 4Y *ion scheme, as worked out .411111vby the UN, is impractical; that if it were implemented, it would bring about a World War, would spread Communism, and would be unfair to the British and the Arabs. • • • TILE PROPAGANDA further attempts to discredit the Dem- ocratic Party by claiming that even the United States, domi- nated by the Democratic Party, supported the partition plan by reason of cheap politics. All that is not a surprise to us because .at no time did we feel that Britain was going to step out of Palestine without a last ditch fight to destroy with it any hopes the Jewish people may have for the right of sur- vival. • • • on parity. It may take a long time . . ." Page 167. When asked by one of the members of the UN Committee "Q. Do you think that there is a chance of your plan or any other plan being carried out under a mandatory or do you think it would have more chance Dr. Magnes answered, "It is difficult, I must confess, for me to say. Mr. Bevin proposes five years. I think that is too short a time . . ." • • • WHEN ASKED "How would you fit in the ideas of Jewish representation in a bi-national state? How would you fit in the idea of Jewish representa- tion in the United Nations?" Dr. Magnes answered, "I must confess it is a problem that I have not seen discussed as thor- oughly as it should be . . . I have not worked out in my own mind just those specific things in which he would be the repre- sentative of the Jews . . . "I have not worked it out for myself, and I have not seen that anybody else has. But I think that one of your func- tions ought to be to try to do that and come back with a pre- pared plan." HOWEVER, NO little credit will be due to Dr. Judah Magnes for sabotaging the partition plan. Dr. Magnes, who pro- claiins himself to be merely a scholar and not a statesman, has been doing everything in his power without authority or ability to push his bi-national state scheme even as recently as a few weeks ago. British and American propa- gandists are now using him as a tool and as proof that the partition plan is unworkable. Dr. Magnes is now consid- ered the moderbte Jew and the rest of Jewry are now the ex- tremists who insist on the im- plementation of the partition plan. * • • (Continued from Page 3) ly. The U. S. will keep its par- tition commitment. The gloomy atmosphere which prevailed the last few weeks is quickly evaporating. Our only danger is a defeatist attitude. If Zionist leaders retain self- control our enemies will lose the war of nckves. Zionist lead- ership in America proved its mettle in the past. Emanuel Neumann was quite right when he recently declared it was too premature to think in terms of redefining the functions of the Zionist Organization of America. The year 1948, as was predict- ed weeks ago, will see the emer- gence of the Jewish State. There will be intrigues, obstacles and bloodshed. But all obstacles will be overcome. If there should be a UN mili- tary force, opposition to a Rus- sian token force will be greatly reduced if Russia promises not to move its troops via land routes but by ships from Odessa. • • • APRIL 1 is the next important IT IS INTERESTING to note that when Dr. Magnes proposed his scheme before the UNSCOP Committee as published in the official records of the General Assembly, Supplement No. 11 VoL III Annex A, he admitted, "It will not be easy to work out a draft of a Constitution for a bi-national Palestine based WHILE ADMITTING that if he had a free hand, he would rather create a Jewish State and while further admitting that the Jews of the world want a Jewish State, yet he proposed this plan to the UN speaking, naturally, for himself. We disagreed with Dr. Mag- nes then but had no quarrel with his right of free speech. But once the will of the Jelvish people of the world had been expressed, even though reluc- tantly, in favor of partition, for a man like Dr. Magnes to write letters to the New York Times and to make representations knowing full well that those who are opposed to a Jewish State would grab at such arguments because of his position as chan- cellor of the Hebrew University in Palestine, it is out and outright treachery which we Jews must not sondone or tol- erate. • Arab Huse to Block Council Acts Doomed DETROIT'S FINEST STRICTLY KOSHER CATERING For Weddings — Showers — Bar Mitzvahs — Banquets Receptions — Luncheon Meetings and Other Functions SPECIAL RATES GIVEN FOR AFTERNOON AFFAIRS date. On or before that date the UN commission will have to ap- point the provisional council of government for the Jewish State. This will be a decisive step. When, on May 15, the man- date is surrendered, Tel Aviv Will automatically be available as a port to the UN commission and the Jewish government. After May 15, British authority will be maintained only in those parts of Palestine where British troops have not yet been evacu- ated. There are no British troops at present in Tel Aviv. With the surrender of the mandate all legal authority exer- cised by the British in Tel Aviv will cease. The Jewish govern- ment will then be able to im- port arms and bring in immi- grants. • • • A CANADIAN GENERAL is a strong candidate for the govern- orship of Jerusalem. He will at the same time be the mayor of the city. The French member of the Trusteeship Council suggested that the membership of the leg- islative council be equally di- vided between Jews, Christians and Mohammedans. It is our prediction that the final solution will be an equal division be- tween the Jews and the rest of the population on a 50-50 basis. Both groups will be separately elected and vote in blocs. This will give dictatorial power to the governor. Invariably when- ever the two blocs will differ, his decision will prevail. • • • Cantor -1;;;Tei SlavenAY.T1 New Former Gov. Harry F.
