DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE

The Voice of the Hadassah Groups to Examine
Man in the Street Palestine Today' at Institute

Photos by JACK RICA 1,51AN

TIME: Sunday morning.
PLACE: Twelfth and Blaine.
QUESTION: What do you think
the name of the new Jewish
State should be?

SANDER SINGER, 1975 Pin-
gree avenue, Wayne University
student. .
I think the new Jewish State
should be named Eretz' Israel.
If I remember my Jewish his-
tory correctly, Israel was the
name of the
Jewish nation
in Palestine
ore it was
ided int o
0ud
udah and Is-
rael.
Much of our
claim to Pales-
tine has been
based on the
Bible, and,
therefore, a
name with early Biblical signifi ;
cance should be chosen.
We are the people of Israel,
and Et etz Israel is the land of
Israel. The two go hand in
hand.

KIVA NEMER, 2480 Buena Vista
avenue, painting business.
If I had my way, the new
Jewish State in Palestine would
be named after Theodore Herzl,
the father of Zionism.
Herzl was the
first ma n to
really fight for
the rebirth of
the Jewish na-
tion in Pales-
t i n e. He de-
voted his
whole life to
finding a
Homeland for
his people. If
not for him,
Jews would still be without a
State..
I think it would be a proper
tribute to name the Jewish
State after Herzl.

"Palestine Today" will be ex-
amined at an all day institute
of Detroit Chapter and the cen-
tral region of Hadassah from 10
a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Jan. 20, at the
Book Cadillac Hotel. The event
has been arranged by the edu-
cational committee under the
chairmanship of Mrs. Harry A.
Paysner.
Mrs. Ezra Shapero, president
of the Central States Region,
will speak at the morning ses-
sion. Rabbi Jacob E. Segal, Mrs.
Morris Adler and Mrs. Benja-
min Glassber will speak at the
afternoon session.
EXHIBIT PLANNED
The morning meeting will
start at 10:30. Various phases
of Hadassah's techniques for
education as well as the hand-
ling and presentation of source
material will be illustrated. A
general workshop on education
will follow.
A feature at the institute will
be an exhibit of products manu-
factured in Palestine. There will
also be a book exhibit on sub-
jects relating to Hadassah and
Zionism.
COMMITTEES LISTED
Committees in charge of these
events are: Speakers: Mrs. Mor-
ris Wayne, Mrs. Samuel J.
Greenberg, Mrs. Carl Schiller;
exhibit: Mrs. Harley J. Citrin,
Mrs. Daniel Mandelbaum, Mrs.
Maurice Landau,
Arrangements: Mrs. Benjamin

MRS. YONA RADZIN, 1636
Gladstone avenue, housewife.
I think the Hebrew word for
home, Bayit, should be selected
as the name of the Jewish
State.
I was born
and spent my
early child-
hood in Pales-
tine and as
long as I can
remember the
basic desire
there was to
build a home
for all perse-
cuted Jews..
The reason Jews fought so
strongly for a State was to pro-
vide this home.
My mother has just returned
from Palestine. She has told me
that refugees are so happy over
•g
t in a free land that they
willing to work long hours
endure untold hardships to
1 .....ti up the State as a home.

Is

SOL BIENENFELD, 1457 Blake
avenue, Wayne law student.
I would select Zion as the
name of the Jewish State. Zion
has always been the symbol of
the hopes of the Jewish people,
7 and since these
hopes have
finally b e en
realized, it is
itting that the
State be called
this.
The sound of
the name Zion
is more stir-
ring than that
of Eretz Israel,
Palestine, Ju-
dea or Israel. It has the inspir-
ing sound of a battle-cry..

15,000 ARAB ILLEGALS
HAIFA (ZOA)—According to
official estimates, there are about
15,000 Arab illegal immigrants in
Palestine.
