Helen Learns Danny Kaye
Has Heart as Big as Smile

By HELEN TENNENBAUM

D ANNY

KAYE is the type of
entertainer who slips into
your heart before you know it.
Your reporter dropped over to
the Michigan Theater for an in-
terview, and when Danny invited
us into his dressing room and
told us to be seateQ—next to
him we were thrilled. beyond
description.
Danny told us he was born in
Brooklyn on a cold winter day,
Jan. 18, 1913. He said he took
part in school theatricals and
started his professional career in
the Catskill Mountains of New
York. From there he made a
jaunt to China and Japan, where
years later he entertained our
army in the Pacific war zone. On
his return he joined a night club
headed by Nick Long Jr.
Danny later was a member of
the young people's group which
produced the "Strawhat Revue"
on Broadway. This show only
ran 10 weeks but it was long
enough for him to find a wife,
Sylvia Fine, whom he married
after a whirlwind courtship. She
still writes many of his scripts.
They have a darling, little
daughter, Deana.
Moss Hart discovered Danny
and cast him in a role in "Lady in
the Dark." Ile soon became a
star, and Samuel Goldwyn hur-
ried to sign him up for Holly-
wood.

STARS IN MOVIES

"WE FEEL SURE that you mov-
" iegoers got many a chuckle
from his four films, "Up in
Arms," "Wonder Man," "The Kid
from Brooklyn" and "Secret Life
of Walter Mitty."
"There's something I would
like to say to your readers,"
Danny said. "This is not directed
just at the Jewish people. It's of
vital importance to each and
every American just as long as
he is interested in one of the
world's greatest problems, the
task of preserving our American
democracy.
"It is the job of everyone espe-
cially minority groups. In fact,
it is a privilege for anyone to be
able to work for the brotherhood
of man. Saving our democracy is
an immense task. It should be

one in which each and every
one is willing to cooperate.

'BE KIND TO OTHERS'
IT WILL HELP you to help
yourselves and our beloved
America. The same goodwill that
we want from others is what we
must extend ourselves. We must
be friendly to all people, regard-
less of their creed, race or co:ar."
Danny smiled at us and then
sighed, seeming to forgot for a
moment again his usual humor-
ous role.
"Oh, it is such a very im-
portant thing for all of us to
realize the importance of the
Golden Rule at this time," he
said.
Danny really cleared up some
of our doubts when he stated
that "the last place in the world
where discrimination can be
found is the movie industry.
This is the one business that has
no room for bigotry. If you have
talents you will get to the top.
We are interested only in your
abilities."

AIDS THE SICK

D URING

HIS appearance in
our city, he was asked by
doctors attending the U. S. Sur-
geons Convention to appear at a
special dinner.
Although very tired he con-
sented on one condition. "I will
entertain in return for 10 free
operations for needy people any-
where in the U. S." The doctors
agreed not to 10 o; erations but
to 100.
Danny has just completed
plans for flying to Europe where
he will entertain.
