Sisterhood Opens
Scholarship Drive

spiritual leader of Bnai Zion
Synagogue of Chicago, will ad-
dress the 800 couples expected
to turn out for the celebration.
Featured on the musical pro-
gram will be Pavel Slavcnsky-
Freilich, who was recently
named Cantor of the congrega-
tion.
The Cantor is a native of
Czechoslovakia, where he served
both in the resistance forces
and the army.
David B. Aaron is overall
chairman of the dedication.
The congregation, under the
leadership of its president, Ira
G. Kaufman, is proceeding with
the building of its school, which
will include library facilities, a
chapel, classrooms and offices.
Although building operations
have been delayed because of
scarcity of steel, the Synagogue
has been told that the steel
superstructure will be under
construction about Dec. 12.

In celebration of the United
Nations' decision to establish a
Jewish state in Palestine, Rab-
bi Leon Fram will deliver a
series of Sabbath Eve Sermons
on "The History and Destiny
of the Jewish State."
The introductory lecture in
the series will be delivered at
the Sabbath Eve services of
Temple Israel, Friday night,
Dec. 19, in the Detroit Institute
of Arts. The title of the sermon
will be "Palestine — the Land
That Produced the Bible."
Subsequent titles in the series
will be "Palestine—The Land
that Produced Christianity,"
"The Holy Land," "Palestine—
The Highway of Empire," 'The-
odore Herzl and the Rise of Zi-
onism," "Palestine in the First
World War," "Palestine and
America," "Christian Friends of
the Jewish State," and "The
Creative Spirit in the New Jew-
ish State."
On Friday, Dec. 12, Temple
Israel will observe Chanukah
Family Sabbath. Rabbi Fram
will preach on "A Time for
Heroism."

The Sisterhood of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek Fps launched
its 1947-48 Torah Scholarship
Drive to raise $9,000 which will
complete a fund of $21,000 to
provide a permanent endowment
at the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America.
The fund, honoring Dr. A. M.
Hershman and Rabbi Morris
Adler, graduates of the semi-
nary, will enable the school to
provide Jewish children with
spiritual leaders, teachers and
directors of youth activities.
Mrs. Louis H. Tobin, chair-
man of special gifts, will be
hostess to members of her com-
mittee at noon Thursday, in her
home on Webb avenue. Rabbi
Adler will speak.
Climaxing the drive, a lunch-
eon will be held Feb. 3 in the
social hall of the Synagogue. A
cantata entitled "The Sabbath"
written by Rabbi Adler will be
presented by the sisterhood dra-
matic group.
Mrs. Joseph Hilbert is in
charge of the personnel for a
cantata that will be part of the
program.
Mrs. Abe Katzman, sisterhood
president, announced the follow-
ing appointments to head com-
mittees for the drive:

man, Charles A. Smith, Maurice
Diem, David Cullen, Irving Mil-
