A MAN of conservative habits,
Baruch ate for years at the same
restaurant. He found the serv-
ice there' attractive and liked
everything about it except the
bread. "I always eat white
bread," he advised the waitress,
but she brought whole wheat.
On the second visit, the conver-
sation was repeated with the
same results. This kept up for
a week. Finally, the next Mon-
day Baruch said casually, "I'll
have whole wheat today."
"That's funny," Said the wait-
ress. "Don't you always order
white bread?"

WE WON'T vouch for this
story but Baruch, who has at
times displayed absent-minded-
ness, was called up by a friend
who said, "You must do some-
thing about the Gazette; it
printed a story of your death this
morning."
"Dear, dear," he answered. "I
suppose we should send along a
card of regret."

BARUCH HAS had a long-
standing feud with a Washington
politician. At a banquet audi-
ence one day, the politician
boasted: "Baruch had every ad-
vantage as a boy. I, on the other
hand, am purely a self-made
man.'
Baruch leaned over to his
neighbor and whispered in the
latter's ear, "Well, at least that
removes the Almighty of a ter-
rific responsibility."

ON ONE occasion, as he sat on
a park bench (where photogra-
phers delight in picturing him)

BARUCH NATURALLY

laugh loudly all the way through

us the story of Baruch order-
ing kidneys for lunch at nit club
one day and then repaired to the
lobby to welcome some visitors.
They became so engrossed in
conversation Baruch completely
forgot his meal.
A half-hour later, the waiter
sidled up and said discreetly,
"Sorry Mr. Baruch, but your
kidneys are spoiling."
Baruch replied, "I've suspected
that for years but I didn't rea-
lize that it was visible to the
naked eye."

BARUCH ONCE attended an
art gathering where the prize
exhibit was a huge canvas en-
titled "The Dance of Salome."
While there he overheard two
of the city's art connoiseurs dis-
cussing its merits.
"What is this supposed to be?"
asked the first.
The second glanced through
the catalogue and answered, "It
says here it's Solomon dancing
for Herod."
"He never did," retorted the
first.
"Oh, but he must have," the
other answered warmly. "Else
how was he photographed?"

AN AUTHOR ONCE told Bar-
uch that book critics were weird
in their ignorance and often con-
fused themselves with God. He
added hastily, "The confusion is
not justified."

AMERICA IS A land of op-
portunity," Baruch one declar-
ed. "A man can start out
sweeping sidewalks and end up
behind a desk-if he doesn't
mind the financial sacrifice."

MUNICH.-A survey of dis-
abled and handicapped Jewish
DP's indicates that only five per
cent of the 2,321 handicapped
Jews in Berlin, Bergen-Belsen
and the U.S. Zone of Germany
are unable to work. Despite in-
juries and wounds received as
a result of the war, concentra-
tion camps, ghetto experiences
or fighting with the under-
ground, more than half of the
disabled Jews listed in the sur-
vey are being helped to return
to their former occupations.
Others requiring special work
conditions are being trained at
new occupations.

BERNARD BARUHCH is known
as -the "unofficial president"
of the United States because he
has served as adviser, in turn,
to Presidents Wilson, Hoover,
Roosevelt and Truman. Although
well in his seventies (he once
referred to himself as living in the
"late afternoon" of his life).
Baruch is still active in political
affairs and his name frequently
crops up in the press, especially
with regard to the issue of atom-
ic energy control.
