Jewish Art, Architecture in Exhibit

Jews' War Service Hailed

Shown is a corner of the Synagogue architecture room of the Jewish Museum in New York
City, former home of Mrs. Felix M. Warburg. This is part of the museum's exhibit, Jewish
Art in Jewish Life,. which opened last week. The painted wooden Baroque Torah Ark at the
left is typical of the Arks used in eastern European rural communities in the early 18th cen-
tury. The Bimah at the center was constructed by the museum. In the rear are three paint-
ings of Synagogue interiors by Marc Chagall. The museum is conducted under the auspices
of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

With the prospect of a change in status imminent, the Jewish
Agency has sent out an appeal for recruits. A gun emplace-
ment dots_ the sidewalk outside the Agency recruiting center
in Tel-Aviv, a symbol of the last curfew when several Agency
leaders were arrested.

Launches Book Month Here

The celebration of Jewish Book Month in Detroit opened Sun-
day at the Jewish Community Center with a lecture by S.
Niger, center, Jewish literature critic. Ile is shown with I.
Zemel, left, chairman of the joint Yiddish culture committee
of the Jewish Community Council and the Center, and Jay
Rosenshine, right, member of the committee. On Nov. 27,
Niger will conduct a seminar on "The Place of Jewish Litera-
ture Today" at the Center.
