Jews in Hockey

YES, THERE are Jewish play-
rs in hockey. Right here in De-
:colt, we have one of the best
ierformers in the International
:Iockey League.
Joe Levine, former Michigan-
()ntario star, is going great guns
or Auto Club. In a recent game,
Isevine scored one goal and as-
isted in two others as his mates
kated to victory.
And over in St. Paul, Minn.,
Mitchell Pechet, a Canadian army
'.'eteran, is one of the most pop-
'ilar members of that city's pro-
: essional team.
His wife is a rabid hockey fan.
She hadn't missed a home game
n three years up to the latter
lart of October. That was when
i family addition arrived.

2 Star at NYU

ALTHOUGH New York Uni-
•ersity isn't regarded as a foot-
power it still has some good
players.
Two of them are Dave Mill-
'nan, hard-hitting 210-pound
'ullback, and Irving Mondschein,
in end, who is a former U.S.
lecathlon champion.

Fichman Dropped

LEON FICHMAN, 26-year-old,
H5-pound guard from the Uni-
versity of Alabama, has been
cropped by the Detroit Lions for
'he remainder of the 1947 cam-
paign.
Fichman, a native of Los An-
;eles, was injured early in the
season and is nOt completely re-
covered.
The Lions' next game is against
the Washington Redskins Sunday
at Briggs Stadium.

Karnofsky Shines

IT'S TOO BAD we won't have
a chance to see the Boston Yanks
in action here. They are not
scheduled as a home opponent of
the Lions.
The Yanks have two outstand-
ing Jewish performers. Sam
Goldman is their regular end,
and Sonny Karnofsky is their
star halfback. Last year, Karnof-
sky led the National Football
League in kick-off returns.
