Mrs. Bernard Dosie
Is Chairman of Affair

Five hundred volunteer work-
ers are needed to give Sunday
mourning, Dec. 7, to the collection
of Supplies for Overseas Surviv-
ors, as part of the SOS emergen-
cy drive here in Detroit, Mandell
Berman, campaign director, re-
ported.
"We have only two requests to
make of the Detroit Jewish Com-
munity," Berman added, "and
these are that every family
should- fill its SOS bag with vi-
tally-needed canned gOods and
that one person out of every
family should volunteer to help
collect these bags on Dec. 7, the
only day we will have an all-
community collection."
The SOS bags will be sent to
all Detroit Jewish families along
with a list of the articles being
sent overseas by the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, sponsor of
SOS.
In addition to canned goods and
good clothing, needed comfort
items include books, toys, lay-
ettes, medical supplies and cos-
metics.
Already pledged to serve on
the drive are members of the
Junior Service Group and tut
Jewish Boy Scouts. Anyone, of
any age, with or without a car,
can help in some phase of the
drive, Berman emphasized.
Persons interested are asked to
call Morris Miller at TE. 1-1600.

NEW YORK—The necessity to
expedite Congressional legisla-
tion embodying the recommenda-
tions of the President's Commit-
tee on Civil Rights was urgen
upon President Truman today by
Mrs. Joseph M. Welt of Detroit,
president of the National Council
of Jewish Women.

In a telegram to the President,
Mrs. Welt declared that forth-
right fulfillment of the report's
recommendations—to correct "de-
nials and violations of civil liber-
ties to minority groups in this
country" — would be a service
both to American unity and the
cause of democracy throughout
'the world.
"The publication of the report
bears testimony before all tt -
world of the strength of a dill
mocracy that can publicly ac-
knowledge its failings," Mrs. Welt
asserted. "But the essential vi-
tality of American democracy
will be measured by its' insist-
ence on correcting its shortcom-
ings."
