Balfour Day Rally
Hears N.Y. Editor

The United States government
shows indications of trying to
persuade other nations to back
the UN recommendations for a
Jewish State, George Cassidy,
editorial director of the N.Y. Eve-
ning Post, told an audience cele-
brating the 30th anniversary of
the issuance of the Balfour Dec-
laration.
Cassidy, formerly Middle East-
ern correspondent for his paper,
was one of the principal speak-
ers at a rally Sunday in Central
High School. The meeting was
sponsored by the Detroit chapter
of the League for Religious Labor
in Palestine. The Detroit Zion-
ist Council joined the sponsor-
ship.
The second principal speaker
was Dr. Oscar Wolfsberg of Jeru-
salem who spoke in Yiddish.
While in Palestine, Cassidy said,
he found attributes hard to dis-
cover anywhere else. Palestine,
he declared, was the only spot in
the Middle East where one could
see anything approaching western
civilization.
"I observed there," he said,
"devotion to popular government
and a respect for the dignity of
the individual of whatever race
or creed. Here is a beachhead of
progress and civilization that is
too rare, too precious to be lost.
Many non-Jews have grown to
realize this and are anxious to
help protect these values."
Rabbi M. J. Wohlgelernter, who
presided, defined the sponsoring
group as an organization dedi-
cated to support the builders 9f
the Homeland on the basis of re-
ligious tradition. Over 30,000
families in Palestine are adher-
ents, he said.

Histadrut Here
Prepares for
'48 Campaign

The Detroit Palestine !lista-
drut Committee, which raised
more than $155,000 in 1947, will
chart pre-campaign plans for its
1948 drive at a special meeting
of over 500 workers and organi-
zational representatives Thurs-
day evening in the Labor Zionist
Institute, Linwood and Pasadena
avenues.
The meeting will hear a finan-
cial report of last year's cam-
paign and will discuss plans for
the forthcoming drive which will
be officially launched the first
week in January.
SELECT DELEGATES
The delegates and workers will
also select Detroit representa-
tives to the 24th annual confer-
ence of the National Committee
for Labor Palestine to be held
Nov. 20-30 in New York.
Harry Schumer, chairman of
the Detroit Histadrut Commit-
tee, and M. L. Schaver, honor-
ary chairman, point out in a call
to workers that the 1947 con-
vention takes place during the
most decisive hour in Jewish his-
tory. They state:
"The United Nations is weigh-
ing the political future of Pales-
tine—the Jews of Palestine are
engaged in a heroic effort to ac-
celerate the process of building
the Jewish State—the remnants
of European Jewry continue
their relentless drive to enter the
borders of Palestine through
every passible channel.

'HISTADRUT VITAL'
"In this challenging hour, the
role of the Histadrut becomes
infinitely more vital. The future
of 6,2 Jewish State depends on
the creation of new settlements
new cooperatives in industry and
agriculture, new forms of social,
cultural and economic life.
"Our convention will express
the will of Detroit and Ameri-
can Jewry to give alt-out aid to
the Histadrut in this epic hour."
