Peace Comes to Poland
It was heart-warming to read the news
that the Jews of Poland are undergoing
an impressive economic and cultural re-
, vival in •contrast to the deterioration of
conditions in the DP camps of Germany
and Austria.
The report came from William Bein,
Joint Distribution Committee director for
Poland who had returned to the United
States after 18 months in Poland.
The government has been friendly, anti-
Semitism is gradually receding and the
remnant of Polish Jewry, 100,000 of them,
has shown remarkable courage and adapt-
ability, he reported.
There is a large segment of the popu-
lation, the aged, the ill, the incapacitated
and the orphans, who still require direct
relief from organizations like the JDC,
however, he pointed out.
A little more than a year ago, Jews by
the thousands were fleeing from Poland in
panic as the aftermath of the Kielce pogrom.
The flight has been stemmed. Indeed,
many Jews are returning to Poland to be-
c4ne integrated in the Polish economy and
to help rebuild the social and religious
structure of the Jewish community.
While we would like to see as many
Jws as possible eventually make Palestine
their permanent home, we must face the
fact that many thousands will have to re-
main in Poland and other European coun-
tries.
It is gratifying to know that terror and
persecution have disappeared in Poland and
in their place have come freedom and equal-
ity of opportunity. Jews who do not wish
to leave Poland or cannot emigrate to Pal-
estine will find in the new Poland a chance
to forget the past and build anew.
Certainly, no one would have predicted
a year or two ago that Poland would in so
short a time provide its Jewish population
with an opportunity for reconstruction and
peace.

The JWV Volunteers
Cynics kept saying that Jewish war
veterans, back at their hearths and their
counters, would never volunteer for an in-
ternational constabulary for Palestine when
faced by the challenge.
To refute their words is the forthright
offer of the JWV at their encampment last
week to join such a force whether spon-
sored by the United States or the UN.
The men. in JWV fought in the last
two wars to help make this a world of jus-
tice and of peace. How could one imagine
that such men would be deaf to the appeal
of their brothers for a land of their cwn
which would be a refuge and a hope? If
heed be, the veterans, now men of peace,
would shoulder a gun once again to assure
justice and security for their hapless
brethren.
That was the message of the JWV.
For this noble and sacrificial offer, all
Jewry owes them honor.

U.S. Pressure Needed
If the UN partition plan should fail in
an Assembly vote, no one would be more
guilty of this new betrayal than the United
States.
It is well known among Washington
correspondents that the State Department
indorsed the majority report with great
reluctance and only after the Democratic
National Committee had made strong rep-
resentations.
I. F. Stone, keen-witted writer for P.
M. in Washington, confirmed that the Mid-
dle Eastern section bureaucrats in the de-
partment had been openly criticising the
American program before delegates from
other countries and been "hinting that the
U.S. will not consider a vote against par-
tition or abstention from the vote at all
unfriendly".
This monstrous meddling by Loy Ilen-
derson's minions, who have regularly fos-
tered the Arab viewpoint as Bartley Crum
has so well shown, may sabotage the UN-
SCOP majority plan and bring about its
defeat when the vote comes up.
Mr. Austin and Mr. Johnson, the top
American diplomats at UN, though not
dominated by Henderson's henchmen, have
given no real impetus to the partition rec-
ommendations. As a result, even South
American delegations are on the fence and
nations like Cuba and Liberia, which nor-
mally would never dare to disregard U.S.
views, are becoming outspoken in opposition.
As we pointed out last week, if enough
states abstain from voting, the proposal
may lose. And there is vast danger those
states which do not wish to offend the U.S.
openly may refrain from voting unless the
U.S. makes it clear that she will consider
either a negative vote or abstention an un-
friendly act:
If the U.S. fails to do so and the plan
Lend a 'Helping Hand
This is a reminder that the Red Feather

We Detroit Jews have been generous to
our own. Let us not forget that Detroit's
needs are still our own.
Let us give our gifts in gratitude that
we are a part of this magnificent and dy-

You may also remember that
for some time Schultz conducted
a .column in the National Jew-
ish Post and that one day Ga-
briel Cohen, publisher and edi-
tor of the Post, who fervently
believes in full freedom of ex-
pression, could no longer stand
Schultz's irresponsible scrib-
bling.
Schultz has no compunction
against using lies in his career
as informer. Last year he wrote
that Jews are not qualified to
become officers in the Russian
army, knowing full well that he
was using a lie.

Rabbi Louis I. Neuman, one
of the most distinguished grad-
uates of the Jewish Institute of
Religion, wrote: "Rabbi Wise,
Prof. Cronbach, Dr. Joshua
Block and others mentioned in
the (Schultz) article need no
defense as loyal Americans .. .
To those non-Jews and Jews
who have been grievously
wronged by Schultz in his viri-
ous articles, I, as one Rabbi,
wish to extend my apology for
my Rabbinical colleagues, and
to say we are ashamed that such
a vilifier has arisen in our

Schultz would never have
merited so much space in our

his Rabbinical status to join
