Seek Sponsor
for Wayne's
Hebrew Dept.

Wayne University stands ready
to introduce a full-fledged de-
partment of Hebrew language and
culture if the Jewish community
is willing to sponsor a chair in
Hebrew for the next five years,
Oscar Cohen, Jewish Community
Council executive director, dis-
closed.
Sponsoring the course may e
tail the expenditure of as much
as $7,000 for each of the five
years, Cohen said. Since no com-
munity agency can undertake
such a commitment, the Council
hopes that an organization or
several of them together or a
private individual will offer to
back the university Hebrew pro-
gram.
"Much prestige and honor can
develop upon the Jewish com-
munity of Detroit with the in-
troduction of advanced Hebrew
studies of the college level at
Wayne. While the elementary
courses now being offered at
Wayne under the capable instruc-
tion of Louis Panush are a great
boon, they cannot be supple-
mented without a grant from the
community.
"I shall be very happy to hear
from any group or individual in-

terested in the promotion of the

Hebiew program."
Wayne courses this semester in-

clude Hebrew 1 offered Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m.,
