YOM KIPPUR SERMON
'Jewish Strength Lies in 3 Sanctuaries'
al
ON YOM KIPPUR, Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler of Shaarey Zedek
preached on the subject, "Silent
Sanctuaries of the Spirit." The
following is an excerpt from the
sermon:
The destructive forces in na-
ture, as in history are violent,
dramatic and explosive. Earth-
quakes, floods and hurricanes
overwhelm cities and towns and
leave behind them a, tragic har-
vest of havoc and ruin. The con-
structive processes in nature and
history are calm, serene and un-
noticed. Thus life continues be-
cause healing, growth, nourish-
ment, recuperation continues si-
lently and undramatically.

THE HISTORY of Israel is re-
plete with political earthquakes,
social floods and economic hur-
ricanes — man-made devastations
and ruin. Israel survived be-
cause in the quiet places Jewish
life continued unrestrained, un-
diverted. The strength of Israel
lay in the intimate, hushed sanc-
tuaries of our inner life. What
are these sanctuaries of strength,
these citadels of serenity?
First I mention the Jewish
mind. Recently a commission of
the UN issued a remarkable
statement opening with the
words "War begins in the mind
of man." The survival of Israel
began in the mind of the Jew."
The Jew saw himself as the
bearer of great things, as the
representative and exponent of a
great law both divine and hu-
mane.
His was a significant role in
the unfolding drama of human
history. All the contumely a
world heaped upon him did not

mate of self. His knowledge of

Unity in Diversity

No Need for Jewish Separateness;
Differences Add Flavor to Things
By ALFRED SEGAL
I STILL FEEL bemused by one of "The Eternal Light" radio pro-

most of "The Eternal Light" shows which, sponsored by the Jew-

out of the air.
This one had to do with the right and the virtue of being

Echod was ordered imprisoned
in the Yellin tower. He was
thrown into a cell that was
darker even than the one in

locked up for killing his own

In time, though, for good be-

Korff is merely a stupid fellow
