THERE WERE AT LEAST 4000 Jewish soldiers in the Spanish-
American War of 1898, which was very short and did not
require a large military force. Thirty Jews were army officers,
and 20 were officers in the navy. Of these army officers four
reached the rank of major, while in the navy the highest rank
attained during the war was that of commander.
Fifteen Jews were among the
crew of the Maine, the destruc-
tion of which occasioned the
war; a half dozen served in
Roosevelt's famous regiment, the
"Rough Riders"; the first man
to fall in the battle of Manila
was a Jew.

Cyrus Adler in the American
0ew ish Year Book for 1900-1901,

to Hear Adler
at Luncheon

Appropriate to the Succoth
season, "Community Harvest
Festival" is the theme of the
annual luncheon meeting of the
Women's Division, Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, to be held at
noon, Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the
Wayne Room of the Hotel Stat-
ler.

Rabbi Morris Adler will be
guest speaker. He will discuss
the responsibility of Jewish wo-
men as citizens of Detroit.

Mrs. H. J. L. Frank heads the
committee which is planning the
luncheon. Members are Mrs.
Joseph Falk, Mrs. Seymour J.
Frank, Mrs. Irving ‘ Hirschman,
Mrs. Harry Jacobson and Mrs.
Daniel Krouse.

The executive committee in-
cludes Mesdames Samuel S.
Aaron, Sidney J. Allen, Eugene
J. Arnfeld, Hyman C. Broder,
Douglas I. Brown, Abraham

Landsman, who will share hon-
ors with Mrs. Abraham Cooper,
soloist.
