Rosh Hashonah Sermon

'Judgment Day Testing Us in America'

ON ROSH HASHONAH at
Temple Israel, Rabbi Leon
Fram preached in part as fol-
lows:
"Our tradition conceives of the
New Year Day as Judgment
Day. On this day, according to
the teachings of our sages, the
world passes in judgment before
God. We know that there is a
divine judgment in history, for
we have lived long enough to
see empires and nations rise and
fall. We have seen the Empire
of Assyria fall because of its
arrogance, the Empire of Egypt
collapse because it enslaved hu-
man beings, and the Empire of
Rome decline and perish because
of its intolerance.

• • •

"THE JUDGMENT OF GOD
seems to work faster nowadays
than ever before. Centuries used

IN @lapse of a wicked empire. We.
however, have been the wit-
nesses of the rise and destruc-

tion of an empire of brutality
within no more than 12 years of
our lives. The Nazi Empire of
malice rose in 1933 and crashed
in 1945.
"The judgment of God is
working in our presence this
very day. The British Empire,
publicly engaged in the plun-
der, torture and murder of
pregnant women and little
children is sinking visibly be-
fore our eyes in a sea of shame
and stench.
• • •
"THE JUDGMENT OF GOD
is today examining the conduct
of all human beings. It is test-
ing us of America to see whether
we are capable of the realization
of democracy, of the recognition
of human equality and the main-
tenance of peace.

"Fervently we all pray on this
day of judgment that when God
measures us, we shall not be
found wanting, but shall be
deemed adequate to live together
in this world in mutual friend-
ship and common prosperity."

PREACHING ON THE subject
"The House of God" at the Rosh
Hashonah evening service, Rab-
bi Fram said:
"A few days ago a little Syn-
agogue in Newport, R.I., was
dedicated by the officials of the
Department of Interior as a na-
tional shrine for the American
people. This, the oldest Jewish
congregation in America, was
organized in 1658 and its Syna-
gogue building was constructed
in 1763. It is the Synagogue in
which George Washington spoke.
"It symbolizes the fact that
our country is based solidly up-
on the principle of religious
freedom. It symbolizes moreover
the equally significant fact that

the United States of America,
now the greatest power on earth,
has drawn its strength not only
from its large territory and its
natural resources and its tech-
nical skill, but from the ideals
which the various peoples and
faiths who settled this country
brought with them.
4,
"THE "TRADITIONS represent-
ed by Touro Synagogue, the
ideals of the prophets, the songs
of the psalmists and the teach-
ings of the Talmud—these also
are part of the strength of
America.
"Even as the ideals of religion
have made our country great,
so they are capable of giving
stability and guidance to every
individual life. Out of our pray-
ers and devotions of the New
Year, may our country be spirit-
ually enriched and each individ-
ual worshiper be equipped with
the courage, the serenity and the
kindliness which are the basis
of democratic peaceful living."
