She has also depicted some of
mankind's Rreat aspirations. for
example, in her portrait of Hen-

humanity. Her portraits of wo-
men, from young girlhood to
womanhood show her compas-
sion for the members of her
own sex.

AMERICAN JEWISH
sculptor-artist of interna-
tional renown is Minna Hark-
avy, who does not just make
pretty statues but perpetuates in
bronze, marble and clay the
beauty and noble aspirations of
mankind as well as the ugliness
and vicissitudes.

In her sculpture as in all her
work, Minna Harkavy shows her
profound feeling towards her fel-
low Americans, her fellow Jews
and all people.

One of her most outstanding
works, embodying this concern
for humanity, is her sculpture
group, American Miner's Fam-
ily, located in the Museum of
Modern Art, New York City.
Showing a miner and his hard-
working wife, it is a structure
of stark beauty, a beauty re-
flected particularly in the child-
ren, who, as Minna Harvavy
portrays them, show the great-
ness to which they could rise
with the right opportunities.

She has also fashioned por-
trait busts ( f some of her
friends and those who are dear
to her. These include Judge
Morris Rothenberg, Max Weber,

tempted to express her appre-
ciation of humanity through
writing. But later she turned to
the plastic arts and found her
forte in sculpture.

She spent five years studying
in Europe, where she acquired
considerable renown. At an
early age her work was exhib-
ited in the leading art salons of
many European cities.

At the present time, without

more vigor than skill is dis-
played in the basketball played
by these teams.
Soccer, however, is played
with considerable skill by vir-
