Pacific Coast Area
Activities Grow

LOS ANGELES—A keen sense
of Jewish national awakening is
asserting itself in small Jewish
communities on the West Coast
notwithstanding the complete ab-
sence of spiritual guidance and
organized Jewish education; de-
clared Hanan R. Yarden, execu-
tive director of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund for the Pacific region,
who recently returned to Los
' Angeles from an 'extensive tour
' through western states.
' Addressing a meeting of the
Jewish National Fund Council,
he pointed out that even in
towns counting a Jewish popula-:
tion from 15 to 25 families, Zion-
ism is exerting a marked influ-
' ence and is becoming increasing-
ly important to their communal
existence.
"Though completely removed
from the lvger centers of con-
centrated Zionist activities," said
Yarden, "there seems to be a
rise in JeWish nationalist aware-
' ness and a longing for identifica-
tion with Jewish life."
"Amazingly enough, despite the
lack of integrated supervision,
the Zionist movement has made
significant inroads in 32 cities on,
the West Coast where one or
more Zionist groups funttion,,
whereas six years ago there was
organized Zionist activity, exclu-
slve of JNF; in four or five cities
' in the same -area."
"It is encouraging to note,"
he/continued "that ' the• Jewish
N t tonal Fund operates in 43 ca-
ti s in/ the Western territory and
th t-Zionists - take a' leading part
in the Welfare Fund campaigns."
The JNF spokesman regretted
that small Jewish communities,
which are in dire need of - Jew-
ish educational orientation are
being overlooked in the shuffle
and that provisions are not made
to supply them with' spiritimi
leadership as well as teachers for
Jewish. eddcation of their -dill-
. - dren.

The appeal came, of course,
from Henry Morgenthau Jr. gene
eral chairman of the UJA, who,
after fulfilling the vital role of
secretary of the treasury in the
New Deal era, and after stand-
ing out as the number one bond
salesman during the war, cer-
tainly earned the title of First
Man of Finance.
He was a very fitting choice
to head this year's all-important
UJA campaign and has certainly
vindicated his selction for the

goal.
