Cynicism, Humor
Come From Bout'.

Z496 ORLEANS

By ELYEll NATHANS

BICKERING BETWEEN hus-
band and wives is a topic which
never fails to give rise to mirth
and wit. But the topic has' its
pitfalls. What can, on the one
hand, provide food• for genuine
good humor can, on the other,
lead into the swamp of cynicism
and bitterness.
My files of Jewish jest show
that the Jewish people have
managed to avoid the danger
and stick closely to the path of
cheer when the age-old issue of
domestic relationship is used as
-- e butt for laughter.
Indeed, one of the earliest of
all Jewish jokes concerns Adam
and Eve themselves and runs
something like this: Shortly
after Adam tasted the Tree of
Knowledge he left his abode and
did not return until a forenoon
several weeks later. -
He doffed his apparel and lay
down to rest, only to be awak-
ened by Eve who suspiciously
demanded of him, "Let me see if
another of your ribs is missing".

Six ambulances, bought in this country, were stepped to Palestine for use by the Red Mogen
David (corresponding to the Red Cross in other countries). Inspecting the ambulances
(above) at the main entrance to the New York City Hall, before they were shipped, are
Mayor William O'Dwyer (second from left) and officials of the Red Mogen David of Palestine.

"But," gibed the traveler.
you don't need both. If one of
you dies then you don't need a
Synagogue. If you figure on
living forever, you don't need
the cemetery."
"You misunderstand," said . the
Jewish innkeeper gently, "We
need the cemetery for travelers."

IN ANSWER TO HIS wife's
protests, Schmerel defended his
taking a drink by saying, "Tin
doctor says a s:..hnappes is al-
ways useful in stopping a cold."
"But you don't have a cold."
"Of course not," agreed
Schmerel, "Why should I wait
until I start coughing? I am
making sure I won't have to."
