Rosh Hashonah Greetings.

WITH AN H ON MY DOG
TAG," by Morris N. Kertzer.
Behrman House, New York,
1947. 197 pages. $2.75.

Civilians, and indeed most men
who served in the forces, hardly
realize how, during the war, the
Jewish chaplain in the army or
navy came to be a symbol not
only of Judaism, but also of Jew-
ish self-respect, Jewish helpful-
ness, Jewish dignity and Jewish
fellowship with Christians.
well, therefore, that Rabbi
t.' ter has set down in print his
nWries of what the chaplaincy
meant to the day by day life of
the • uniformed men, what it
meant on an invasion beach, and
what it meant to the surviving
civilian Jewish population in
Europe.
He has done this simply, nat-
urally and unpretentiously, with-
out heroics. His anecdotal story
illumined by vivid human touch-
es does not linger among the
horrors. It passes pleasantly from
impressions to deep observations
on what it was all about, from
travel snapshots to a story that
tugs at the heart, from light
comment on G. I. doings and
sayings to trenchant observations
on Jewish sorrow and Jewish
destiny.
The bloody vision of war's de-
struction and savage meaning-
lessness are seen through the eyes
of one who tried to bring the
emollient of religion to men who
sorely needed its comforting
strength.
Rabbi Kertzer has illuminating
Chapters on Chief Rabbi Zolli, the

state of French Judaism, the work
of the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee in Europe.
What he says about Russia
and "French Windows to Am-
erica" should be required read-
ing. His call for a sense of mis-
sionary zeal in American Jewry
is one which should be heard by
the Rabbinate and the other lead-
ers and planners of American
Jewry.
Rabbi Kertzer gives us more
than interesting information and
entertainment; he makes us think.

For the first few years, they
did nothing but "wash" the soil,
since it was far too salty for
anything to grow. And after the
first crop came up, everyone
was very happy that the ex-
perts had been wrong. The cli-

cow in January, 1947. In addition to giving all Soviet citizens
religious freedom, anti-Semitism is a crime. The Jewish Council
for Russian Relief has been appointed exclusive agency for
shipment of rehabilitation supplies from American Jewish or-
ganizations to the USSR and has launched its 107 campaign
for funds to help rehabilitate Soviet war-orphans.

CAN'T SINK THERE
THE SALT SEA (or Dead Sea)
itself is an amazing phenomenon.
It is extremely saturated with
salts—mostly of chlorine—and
the story that it is impossible
to sink there is quite true, as
some of us who went in swim-
ming know. Toward evening,
when the temperature begins to
drop, and some evaporization
takes place, a fog can be seen
directly over the lake, which is
the result of the salt-filled wa-
ter vapor. The factory there,
(Palestine Potash Co.) by a
complicated process of fractional
crystallization, extracts the vari-
ous salts, and refines them for
domestic and foreign use, (the
chief product being potassium
chloride, used as fertilizer).
We were able to take a trip
through the factory with one of
the chemists as our guide, and
although only the chemists
among us understdod what it
was all about, we all enjoyed
it and learned something. In-
cidentally, this is one of the
largest plants of its kind in the
world, which is something of
which to boast, being in one of
the smallest countries.

TIME RUNS OUT
WELL, SO MUCH for this
one trip. I would really like to
go on and describe to you some
of the other places we've visited
—especially the Emek Jezreel
and Upper Galilee, which are
the prettiest sections of the
country.
And th/ Emek in particular,
with the dozens of Kibbutzim
and Kvutzot, old and new, all of
which have a fascinating history
of settlement behind them. And
the cities—Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jeru-
salem, Safed, Tiberias, etc.
Time and space are running
out. Meanwhile, I hope you'll
have the opportunity in the near
future to join us here; Palestine
is waiting for Jews.
