U.S. Again Sends
Tourists to Zion

legals' Permitted in Eretz

NEW YORK—More than 800
American tourists sailed for Pal-
estine in the past four months,
according to a report released
by Dr. Simon Bernstein, director
of the Palestine Bureau of the
Zionist Organization of Amer-
ica. This marks a resumption of
American tourist movement to
Palestine since before the war.

The dearth of American tour-
ists to Palestine was particularly
noticeable in N45, when the
Palestine government discour-

aged tourist travel because of a
purported shortage of food and

hbusing in the country.

A group of DP's from the British zone of Germany embarked for Palestine from Marseille,
France, recently under British supervision. These people were part of the first group to be sent
to Palestine under the agreement by which half the Jews entering Palestine come from the
British zone of Germany and the others from Cyprus. The refugees (above) were escorted to
Marseille by officials of HIAS, the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society.

During the war, camp guards
patroling a section where Polish
Jews were quartered grew star-
tled and indignant when one en-
terprj-sing Jew placed a sign out-
, side his cell reading, "Learn the
lafiguage of Roosevelt and
Churchill before they come here."
The guards ordered the Jew
to change the sign. He replaced

IN ANOTHER CAMP, near an
air-raid precaution station, a
venerable old man had accus-
tomed himself somehow to sleep
every night, in spite of the con-
tinuous gunfire.
The night the Germans capitu-
lated, while he was sleeping the
guns failed to fire. The old man
jumped out of his bed, quivering
with alarm, "What was that?" he
cried.

ONE DAY THE Nazis an-
nounced that they were going to
take away all the young Jewish
men in the camp, which was sta-
tioned beside a zoo. Frantic with
fear, the mother arranged for her
son to take refuge in the hide of
a dead gorilla.

The next day she went to visit
him and bring him food. He de-

swing blithely on the trapeze.
Suddenly he slipped and fell into
the lions' cage.
The mother, expecting her son
to be devoured, started to scream.
"Be still," said one of the lions,
in a distinctly Jewish accent,
"You'll give us all away."

A DP WAS BEING tested by
a young psychiatrist whose job
was to determine the feelings of
the camp inhabitants. But the
psychiatrist was flustered and
kept asking the wrong questions,
to the DP's growing annoyance.
Then this conversation ensued:
Doctor—What would happen if
I cut off your ear?
DP—I couldn't hear.
Doctor—And if I cut off the
other ear?
DP—I couldn't see.
Doctor—Why not?
DP—Because my hat would fall
over my eyes.

A SOCIAL SERVICE worker
visiting a camp tendered a lemon
to the five-year-old girl who ac-
companied her parents on the in-
terview.
"Do you know what this is?"
she asked.
After slight hesitation, she an-
swered, "It's a lemon."
"But she couldn't have named
it," the mother cried. "She's
never seen one in her life."
"Oh yes I have,' she retorted
indignantly.
"Where?" asked the mother.
"In the funny strips the Amer-
ican soldiers left here," was the
shattering reply.

THIS JOKE ABOUT the Ger-
man navy was a favorite during
the war.
The file clerk entered the Ger-
man naval office and reported to
the commander, 'We have de-
veloped a completely new filing
system, as you requested. Only
four files are needed now for
our entire navy."
"Very good," strutted the com-
mander. - What are they?"
"Simple," said the clerk, ''They
are: Building, Finished, Sinking,
Sunk."
