tent force in the Metropolitan
Opera Company, was born in
Berlin. He got his musical
training there and made his
early successful appearances,
first in the Berlin State Opera
and later in the Berlin Opera.
An important place at the
Metropolitan is occupied by the
young artist Alexander Sved, a
son of religious Jewish parents
of Hungary. Before coming to
the Metropolitan, he appeared
successfully in the largest, best
known European operas, where
he participated in the Salzburg
festivals.
Sved is often cast with Jennie
Taurel, a French Jewish girl,
who plays "Carmen". Miss
Taurel is now recognized as one
of the best "Carmen". Unfor-
tunately, we know very little of
her Jewish background.
Among the new faces in Amer-
ican Opera is the recently ar-
rived Hungarian, Alvera Loren-
zo, who comes from an old
established Jewish family in
Europe. Lorenzo is a nephew of
the late celebrated German Jew-
ish writer, Jacob Wasserman.

American-born opera singers
chosen recently to be heard by
the "Diamond Jubilee" of the
Metropolitan.
Christina Carrell, the daugh-
ter of orthodox Jewish parents;
Martha Lipton, a New York
Jewish girl; young Nathalie
Bodanya, who made her debut
with the Philadelphia Grand
Opera and at once attracted the
attention of opera lovers and
music critics throughout the
country.
Among the older Jewish ar-
tists of the Metropolitan Opera
Company, an important place is
held by Alexander Kipnis, who
comes from poor Russian-Jewish
people.

Opera Company. Up to Hitler's
occupation of Austria, Leinsdorf
was conductor of the State Opera
there. He distinguished himself
especially in conducting Wag-
nerian operas.
And we must not forget Bruno
Walter, who appears from time
to time at the Metropolitan.
He is one of the most important
music conductors in the world.
He conducted operas in all the
large cities of the world and
excelled especially in the Bey-
routh Festivals.
The Nazis treated him brutal-
ly and he and his family just
about managed to escape with
their lives. Walter comes from
a noted Jewish family in Hun:
gary and Austria. With his coin-
ing to this country, the Ameri-
can musical scene has been en-
riched beyond estimation.
