5707 in Education:
Enrollments Jump

Agencies Increase Appropriations;
Interest of Local Groups Grows

1'HE PAST YEAR has wit-
nessed some positive results
making for promise in the field
of Jewish education and has
also revealed certain retarding
factors which have hampered its
development.
Most gratifying has been the
general intensification of inter-
est in Jewish education, mani-
fested in many ways. A major
evidence of this interest was the
greater recognition on the part
of community councils and local
federations, of the educational
needs in their respective com-
munities, as shown by their giv-
ing greater appropriations for
f"'Jewish education.
1s. , 23 PCT. BOOST
A year ago, federations and
welfare funds contributed to
Jewish education in 45 com-
munities (among which were
not included the large cities
such as New York, Boston, Chi-
cago and Philadelphia) the sum
of $883,225 and in thi past year,
$1,092,482, an increase during
the year of 23.7 percent.
Another clear expression of
this interest is to be found in
the increasing number of Jew-
ish communities willing to• as-
sume responsibility for the over-
all state of Jewish education in
their localities, irrespective of
ideological approaches and or-
ganizational divisions.

all-day. The latter, according to
a study made about four months
ago, had increased its enroll-
ment during this year an addi-
tional 20 percent.

MORE HEBREW STUDY
During the last few years
there has also been a marked
trend to broaden and make more
thorough the curriculum of
many weekday and Sunday
schools. This trend revealed it-
self in the greater emphasis
placed on Hebraic studies in
both the weekday and Sunday
school.
A number of Sunday schools
have introduced the study of
Hebrew on one or more week-
days; many afternoon weekday
schools have added Hebrew pre-
school and kindergarten classes,
others have opened or expanded
their Hebrew high school de-
partments.
A serious effort to intensify
the Jewish educational program
in the congregational •school is
being made by the United Syna-
gogues of America. In an official
statement of objectives they
recommend a minimum of six
hours of classroom instruction
per week and the extension of
the educational process through
the high school period.

ASK ASSISTANCE
The number of communities
' requesting the American Asso-
ciation for Jewish Education to
help them organize themselves
so that they may assume and
discharge this responsibility, ex-
ceeds greatly the capacity of the
association to work, with at any
one time.
There are at' present in the
country, 35 local central agen-
cies of Jewish education and
two regional agencies. During
the past year new central agen-
cies were opened in Bridgeport,
Atlanta, Schenectady, San Fran-
cisco, Des Moines, and Winni-
peg, Can.

ENROLLMENT INCREASES
The commulative effect of this
heightened interest in Jewish
education was shown in an in-
crease in Jewish school enroll-
ment in all types of Jewish
schools. This increase was com-
puted last year at about 15 per-
cent. As Jewish Education
Month and Week got under way
Sept. 7, indications pointed to
the fact that the new school
year will also show an increased
enrollment.
All types of schools shared
in this increase—the Sunday,
the afternoon weekday, and the

completely in harmony with the
American philosophy of life.
The potentialities of this edu-
cative approach for increasing
the Jewish educational program
are indead very great and are
most promising.
TEACHER TRAINING
The Jewish institutes of high-
er learning have reflected the
expanded activity of the Jewish
schools by extending their pro-
grams for training teachers. All
the Jewish schools of higher
learning shared in this develop-
ment: The Teachers Institute of
the Jewish Theological Semi-
nary, the Yeshivah University,
Herzliah Teachers Seminary and
the Colleges of Jewish Studies
of Baltimore, Chicago, Boston.
