THE FARMERS and villag-
ers of the little community
of Berlin in upstate New York,
Dr. Rubin Ryvkin was the
"Good Physician." Dr. Ryvkin
died recently, but his memory
will long be treasured in Berlin
by the people who remembered
him as a "lovable little man
with twinkling eyes."
There was a "story behind the
story!' of Dr. Ryvkin :s death
from a heart attack while tire-
lessly serving his patients, It
was revealed in a letter by one
of his colleagues, Dr. James J.
Rainey, published in . the Troy
(N. Y.) Times Record.

EXILED BY NAZIS
Dr. Ryvkin was a refugee who
Came to America from Czecho-
slovakia after he was driven out
of his native country by the
Nazis. He took up his work
again in the little rural com-
munity with the help of the
physicians' committee of United
Service for New Americans,
whose work is supported by the
$170,000,000 campaign of the
United Jewish Appeal for 1947.
Dr. Rainey's letter revealed
how completely he had won the
understanding of his new fel-
low-townsmen. Dr. Rainey
wrote:
"The newspaper said that 'Dr.
Rubin Ryvkin, 55, Berlin phy-
sician, expired suddenly of n
heart attack shortly before 11
a.m. today after he had gone
into a Troy garage for the pur-
pose of having chains placed on
his car. But it was another pair
of chains that was the real
cause of hig death. It happened
on a mountainside near Berlin
just about a year ago.

scribed his experience of the
day.
"He was called to see a sick
child. You knew the family.
There were 10 children. They
were quite poor, but it was a
happy family and none of them
was afflicted with the leprous
vice of self-pity. They lived in
the last house on the last road,
in the Grafton hills.
"Halfway up the mountain it
began to snow. He had had little
rest the last few days, answering
calls day and night. After put-
ting on one chain he felt a pres 7
sure in the chest and found him:
self gaspini for air. However, he
managed to crawl into his car
and lay there for more than two
hours until a car came along on
that rarely-traveled road. The
other chain was put on for him
and soon he recovered sufficiently
to make his call."
