Colonies Built Up
by Religious Group
TEL AVIV—The religious labor
Zionist organization, Hapoel Ha-
mizrachi, is celebrating the
twenty-fifth anniversary of its
inauguration in Palestine.
The first nucleus of Hapoel
Hamizrachi was composed of
orthodox immigrants who came
to Palestine with the first wave
of immigration following on the
Balfour Declaration. Straight
from the Yeshivoth of Poland
and Lithuania, they came to
Palestine under the inspiration
of their religious sentiment, out
of a desire to contribute to the
rebuilding of the Holy Land in
the spirit of the Torah and the
vision of the prophets.

The number of Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi agricultural settlers in
Palestine is over 5,000. There
are a number of smallholders'
settlements which are not con-
sidered as Hapoel Hamizrachi
settlements, but in which a large
part of the population consists
of members of Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi.

IN-cligEF of THE SogIET NAT(
LABOR AND FAITH
They were distinguished from
other religious elements by the
fact that they did not contend
themselves with the mere trans-
fer of Jews from the Diaspora to
Palestine, but aimed at creating
in Palestine a new community
based on the principles of self-,
labor. They aspired, in trans-
ferring the Jewish people to
Palestine, to build up new na-
tional values based on a .life of
labor, which they ,stressed .was a
cardinal principle of the Jewish
religion.
Out of this nucleus there de-
veloped a national religious
workers' association which exerts
a notable influence in the Zion-
ist movement and the Yishuv.
Its membership in Palestine
numbers over 20,000, who pro-
vide guidance and help to sister
organizations in all countries
with a Jewish population.
••
MET OPPOSITION
The path of Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi has not been. an easy one.
It..was forced to contend -with
suspicion on the part of certain
sections of public opinion, parr
ticularly among the labor com-
munity, who expressed little un-
derstanding for religious work-
ers.
But, unlike other religious
movements, Hapoel Hamizrachi
did not rely on propaganda and
preaching alone. It chose the

path of constructive achieve-
ment, the setting up of religious
institutions, in settlements and
towns. Thus, it did not merely
call wen others to observe the
Sabbath and the religious char-
acter of Palestine, but founded
its own settlements and institu-
tions in which 'it implemented
religious .observance. and tradi-
tion, thereby setting a good
example to others.

BUILD 13 COLONIES
In proclaiming that it intended
to solve the prol?lems of Pales-
tine's reconstructien.in the spirit
of the Torah, the Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi demonstrated by its activ-
ities and achievements how this
could be done -in , practice.
Singe in its view the Torah
cannot he observed and Pales-
tine cannot.be built in its ,spirit
except on tbe.bas.is .of selfdabor,
Hapoel Hamizrachi set up vari-
ous social calls and payed ..the
path to be followed by religious'
Jewry and the Yishuv as a
whole.
Hapoel Hamizrachi has 13 col-
