40 Pa. of Home for Aged Budget

Comes From Al[, Keys Reports

MORE THAN 40, per cent of mission committee, explained
the 1947-48 budget of the while describing the admissions
Jewish Home for Aged will conic procedure. Working with New-
from funds raised in the 1947
Allied Jewish Campaign, ac-
cording to Myron A. Keys, pres-
ident of the Home. Included in
this figure are the maintenance
costs for 30 of the 181 residents
whose total care is provided by
the community, as well as a
substantial part of the mainte-
nance costs for many others.
"Since need and not ability
to pay, is the deciding factor
in admitting an aged person,"
he said, "there Is a great varia-
tion in the percentage of main-
tenance received for individual
residents from sources other
than the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign."

STATE ASSISTANCE
EIGHTY-SIX OF THE 181
rgidents receive State . old-age
assistance, which meets about a
third of the cost of caring for
an individual. Another five of
the residents are the beneficiaries
of federal Old Age and Sur-
vivors' Insurance, covering a
fifth of their maintenance.
Another source of support is
children of the old folks, who
are asked to contribute regular
payments when able. Forty.
eight of the old people are sup-
ported in part, twelve in whole
by their children.
The only criterion for admis-
sion to the Home is need for a
protected environment because
of infirmity and inability to fit
into any alternative plan, Gus
D. Newman, chairman of the ad-

man on this committee are Dr.
Harry Bennett, Joseph Bern-
stein, Mrs. Abraham Ferar,
William Sandler, Harold Silver,
executive director of the Jewish
Social Service Bureau, and Abe
L. Sudran, associate director of
the Jewish Welfare Federation.

APPLICANTS NUMEROUS
"THERE ARE SO many more
applicants than we can accom-
modate that wherever possible
we try to find other means of
providing for the old people,"
Newman said. "In any proce-
dure concerning, people, rigid

rules cannot be made and every
application is judged on its own
merits," Newman added.
"There are certain definite
steps, beginning with filing the
application at the Home and in-
terviewing the executive direct-
or, Ira I. Sonnenblick, that are
always taken in the admissions
procedure," Newman explained.
Separate investigations are made
by two members of the com-
mittee and by a staff member
of the Jewish Social Service
Bureau.

ALL APPLICATIONS are re-
viewed by the admissions com-
mittee, and if there is a differ-
ence between the committee's
and the JSSB's recommendations
the application goes before the
executive committee of the
Home for final review.
Members of this committee in-
clude Keys, chairman, Sidney J.
Allen, Dr. Bennett, Bernstein,
Mrs. Ferar, Arthur Fleischman,
Max J. Kogan, David Levine,
Henry Levitt, Newman, Sandler,
Leonard N. Simons, Silver, Isi-
dore Sobeloff, executive director
of the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, and Mrs. Samuel Weller,
ex officio, president of the Wo-
men's Auxiliary of the Home.
Although applicants are sup-
posed to be at least 65 years of
age, some younger people have
been admitted to the chronically
ill wing. "In the absence of a
Detroit Jewish Chronic hospital,
Jewish convalescent home and
Jewish hospital, the Jewish Home
for Aged serves not only to
care for the old people, but also
provides community care for the
aged who are chronically ill,"
Newman pointed out.
