Truman Orders
More Visas Issued

Action Will Speed
Qualified Migrants

WASHINGTON (JTA))—Pres-
ident Truman has brought to
the attention of the Department
of Justice the fact that its im-
migration service is not making
full use of the quotas available
to potential immigrants who
can comply with the existing
immigration regulations, Rep.
Adolph Sabath, of Illinois re-
ported.

Sabath said that during a
visit to the White House he
pointed out to the President
that officials of the immigration
service are discriminating
against displaced persons who
can comply with our immigra-
tion laws within existing quotas.
The President expressed con-
cern over this information and
assured Sabath that he would
again ask that no restrictions
be placed upon persons who can
qualify for immigration visas.
President Truman also reiter-
ated his support of the Stratton
Bill, which provides for the
admission of 400,000 displaced
persons to the United States
within a period of four years.
He emphasized that the U.S.
will take an active interest in
the Palestine question when it
comes before the UN General
Assembly next month, Sabath
said.

Woman of the Week

IN A WORLD FRAUGHT with discontent, Mrs. Max Dushkin
stands out as a beacon which flashes rays, of hope and inspiration
to Detroit's Jewish community.

By conviction, Mrs. Dushkin is an ardent traditionalist. She
believes that orthodoxy provides the best spiritual and intellectual
guidance to Jews groping for direction. In her philosophy there
is• no room for modern eclectic
religion, which takes unto itself
a little from one faith and a
little from another.
"Basic Judaism is superior to
any of the new faiths being
substituted. for it," Mrs. Dushkin
argu'ed. "Some persons think
that they are progressive be-
cause they have brushed aside
the old traditions and the an-
cient rituals. But I'm sure they
have abandoned orthodoxy be-
cause the self-discipline is too
rigid for them to. live up. to.
"I don't believe in' compro-
mising my religion," Mrs. Dush-
kin explained. "When you get
through compromising you have
nothing left."

"These people do not realize that there is no nationality in
the world with complete unity. It is only in a communistic or
fascistic state that `unity' is attained, and that's because no one
has the right to dissent," Mrs. Dushkin pointed out. "Who
there who would be willing to sacrifice his individual freedom
for that negligible quality?"

Dushkin is critical of the Jewish leaders of past genera-
tions because of their lack of foresight.

"Marty of our present day programs are wasted because ow
forebears did not take a long range view of their problems and
did not develop leaders or build solid foundations from which we
could now launch our activities. Those leaders adapted them-
selves to the immediate situation and didn't plan for the future.

"It is a trite saying, but if you feed a hungry man today,
you really haven't solved his problem. Unless you condition him
to his environment so he can carry on by himself, he most as-
suredly is going to be hungry again tomorrow."

DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE

Friday, September 5, 1947

To Mrs. Dushkin, personal integrity is the most admirable
trait a human being can possess.

"If you can earn the respect of your co-workers so that they
individually accept your word and trust you implicitly, then in my
estimation you have attained the highest human goal," Mrs.
Dushkin said.
"In this day and age, it is possible to buy public opinion, but
you can't buy private opinion."
