Flint Conference
Is Called in Crisis

FLINT—The first large-scale
Michigan' conference to deal with
the DP crisis will be held here
Sunday, Sept. 21, when more
than 300 delegates representing
20 Michigan communities con-
vene at the Durant Hotel for a
special statewide conference of
the United Jewish Appeal, Fred
M. Butzel of Detroit, conference
chairman, announced.
The conference will climax the
'observance in this state of the
"Ten Days of Remembrance" in
which American Jewry will
commemorate during the High
Holy Day period the death of
6,000,000 Jews under the Nazi
reign and mobilize for the at-
tainment of the $170,000,000 goal
of the United Jewish Appeal.
Butzel emphIsized that the
plight of Europe's displaced per-
sons is more desperate than at
any time since the war's end
more than two years ago. He
pointed out that UNRRA's ces-
sation of activities last July 1,
has resulted in a crisis of ma-
jor proportions in the DP camps,
with the overwhelming majority
of the displaced persons living
on starvation rations.
The
International
Refugee
Organization, he said, which re-
placed UNRRA is "hamstrung"
iy lack of fuhds and trained per-
sonnel.
