littlifett An Open Letter: Partitioned Palestine Will Not End Jewish Homelessness, UN Warned (Editor's Note: This is the second of two articles by Zalman Berul in the form of an open letter to the United Nations demonstrating the illegality of Britain's action in dividing Palestine at the Jordan River and in setting up Transjordan as an independent state. The creation of a Jewish State from Jewish areas of Palestine and certain parts of Transjordan is proposed in this second article. For the second time within a year, Transjordan's request for admission into the United Nations was rejected last week when Russia refused to recog- nize the legality of its establishment as a separate state.) Gentlemen: On March 22, 1946, just a few days before the report of the Anglo-American commission of Inquiry on Palestine (formed on British initiative) was to present to the British government and the President of the United States its recommendations for an immediate and long-term solution of the Palestine problem, the British government sliced off the Transjordan region of Palestine, fully effected. ► • • . prising more than three- ths of Palestine's territory, BELONGS TO JEWRY A PARTITION OF the whole turned it into an independ- Palestine territory including ent Arab kingdom. • • • Transjordan irto Arab and Jew- ish halves would permit both TERMED ILLEGAL THIS ACT IS patently invalid, peoples more "lebensraum" with for while Britain is surely priv- many major problems solved. The British intention, of course, was to place before the world a fait accompli. Legally, the action is nothing more than a brazen breach of law and trust. even millenia to come unless Jewish vision and enterprise can take it over. We ought not permit three-fourths of the Holy Land historically and legally belonging to the Jewish people to remain barren forever with Jewish survivors of Hitler's gas chambers being driven back from the shores of their Prom- ised Land. To bring about a rightful solu- tion of the Palestine problem, the UN ought not to leave the question of the validity of the amputation of 35,000 square miles of Palestine up to Britain alone. If Britain received a mandate in 1922 over a land of 45,000 square miles, the UN ought not to permit her to hand over to UN authority only a residue of 10,000 square miles when a full and honest solution of the whole problem lies in a program which envisages the division of the two areas among the Jews and Arabs alike. Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky, said that the young diplomat was probably killed in battles at Budapest two years ago, or by the pro-Nazi regime in Hungary prior to liberation. Anti-fascist organizations with a membership of more than a million Swedes have indicated that Vishinsky's statement does not satisfy them. They insist that a statement on the case „should come from Premier Stalin. India Jews Hopeful Over New Regimes BOMBAY, India (JTA) — The Jewish Central Board of Bombay, the leading Indian Jewish organi- zation, has pledged its allegiance to the new Indian government. Special services were held in Synagogues throughout India in behalf of the new dominion. The board reported that the Jewish community was hopeful about its future under the new regime, particularly in view of recent assurances extended by In- dian leaders concerning the status of minority groups. • • • 11111M1111 — SHUN NATIVE LANDS Not over 25 percent showed a willingness to go anywhere else, ■ 1111111•11111111111•1111.111. ■ . Meanwhile, it' was announced that the three working groups into which delegates of UNSCOP were divided in order to facilitate consideration of various aspects of the Palestine problem have completed their studies and will report to a plenary meeting of the committee. The DP sub-committee's find- ings, declares that the problem of the displaced Jews is a com- ponent part of the larger prob- lem of Palestine. The "over- whelming sentiment" found among Jews in every camp vis- ited is in favor Df going to Pal- estine, the report says. LONDON, (JTA)—The Jewish community of Liverpool is in its fourth week without kosher meat, ; Radom, Bialystok Dead Memorialized Report 'Overwhelming Sentiment' for Seeking a Refuge in Palestine ► ► UN CHALLENGED IF THE UN finally subdivides the western remnant of Palestine into two or three states, the decision 'will surely be one based on provisions of interna- tional law and justice. Yet the action would be ,.marred by the black chapter of the illegal British act of ceding 35,000 square miles to a satellite Arab emir. With these 35,000 square miles able to play a great part in solving the Palestine problem, the perplexing question arises, why did the UN permit the amputation of the Transjordan to pass as a fait accompli? The partition df the western remnant, even if the Jewish people were granted a few thou- sand miles for an "independent state," will inevitably leave the basic problem of Jewish home- lessness unsolved. Consequently such partition would rather serve as the excuse for new trouble. But if law is applied and the legal basis of the Trans- jordan annexation is ascertained, a true partition ,of the Holy Land can be honorably and law- where Jews from Bialystok now reside. • • • DP Camp Outbreaks Feared by UN Group ► 4tige Fifteen DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE Cantor DAVID GOLDEN HOUSE OF LAMPS Phone US. 2 - 8338 Open until it p.m. Wed & Fri. • ETP.I. ••••••• ■•■ •••• ■ •••• ■■•■ •••• ■•■ ••••••••• ■ ••••••••••••• ■•■ •••••• ■ •••• ■ ••••• ■ C r. 11738 DEXTER BLVD.
