The Jewish
Jester
BILLY
ROSE, affectionately
known as the pint-size Bar-
num is a man of extraordinary
achievements.
NATURALLY ENOUG II,
many of Rose's jokes stem from
the repertoire of vaudeville and
stage. A chorus girl during
the need for farm-help in the
recent war, decided to help out.
She responded to an advertise-
ment for a shepherd.
"No, no, my girl," said the
farmer, when he saw her. "You
won't do. I asked for a shep-
herd, not a shepherdess."
"I know that," cooed Gerald-
ine, "but that's no reason why
a women can't do the work." •
"Well," drawled the farmer,
"a women tried it once and
messed the job up."
"Who was she?" asked Ger-
aldine.
"Bo-Peep," was the sharp re-
tort.
- O-
ROSE ONCE BLASTED a
thespian bore whose main claim
to distinction was his boast
that he could distinguish be-
tween any and all beverages.
Finally Rose produced a flask
-from his pocket, asked the con-
noisebr to taste it and tell hill)
what it was. The bore tasted a
mouthful and promptly spat it
out.
"Great Scott," he shrieked,
"That's gasoline."
"I know," said Rose blandly,
"but what brand?"
- 0--
ROSE SAYS THAT he knows
a Times Square guard who
greets oncoming passengers with
this shout as they enter
BMT subway, "LS-BMT. LS-
BMT. Try our trains. They're
so round, so firm, so fully
packed."
- o-
PART OF ROSE'S job at
times is to stifle off developing
quarrels among overexuberant
patrons of the Diamond Horse-
shoe. One night two men started
to go at it hot and heavy when
the diminutive Rose intervened.
"What's the reason for the
brawl?" he asked.
"I called him a liar," growled
one combatant.
"So what if I am a liar?"
snarled the other. "I've got a
right to be sensitive, ain't I?"
-o-
IT'S SAID THAT the only
time Rose was ever stopped for
a bright retort was during the
last-day rehearsals for "Carmen
Jones." Scenery hadn't arrived.
The star had the flu.
Rose was trying to reach a
certain party from his hotel by
phone. Each time the connection
was wrong. Exasperated, Rose
finally yelled into the phone'
"Am I crazy or are you?"
I'm sorry, sir," said the
switchboard operator, "I do not
have that information."
Today a prodigiously success-
night-club owner (immor-
talized in celluloid) and syndi-
cated daily columnist, he is
also the entrepeneur behind the
stunningly effective "Carmen
Jones." He masterminded "Jum-
bo" with elephants and "Acqua-
cade" with the most celebrated I '
male and female swimmers in
ful
the Union.
Rose is mighty proud of his
chorus girl line at the Diamond
Horseshoe. Not long ago he met
a boyhood chum and, as a spe-
cial treat, took him to the re-
hearsal of a new production.
One girl after another came
out on the stage in rehearsal
costume. The chum stared, but
contented himself with an occa-
sional explosive ''Phooey."
Rose, greatly annoyed, finally
said, "I don't understand you.
Here I show you the most beau-
tiful women in the United
States and all you do is sit
here and say, `Phooey.'"
"I wasn't thinking of the
girls," said the chum sadly. "I
was thinking of my wife."

ROSE DEVOTED a recent
column to his trip to Miami in
which he lambasted the sky-
high prices. Strange things hap-
pened there, he admitted. Just
for a laugh he phoned the
weather bureau and asked.
"How about a shower tonight!"
"Definitely," came the snap-
py answer. "If you want one,
take one."
