The question is rather this: Has Britain become so deeply involved in Palestine that to save face she will impose harsh punitive measures in a counter-reprisal that will only evoke new retaliation from the extremists? Within the next few days, the British empire will turn tail despite two centuries of dominion and will ignominiously depart from India. Facing a financial crisis, the empire is beginning to call in its forces from Greece and Italy and is contemplating the reduc- tion of its complements in Germany. ■ * * Yet, Britain, incongruously enough, has made no plans to withdraw a single soldier from Palestine. About 100,000 fully-armed men remain in the tiny country because of British stubbornness and British bungling. Dr. Abba Hillel Silver put it pointedly when he charged that the British forces are being used by Foreign Secretary Bevin "to impose a blind and blundering policy upon Palestine which he knows cannot be en- forced. "That policy," Dr. Silver warned, "must be quickly abandoned before anarchy sweeps over the Holy Land." As long as Palestine remains a battlefield and Britain renounces justice for appease- ment and vainglory, there will be acts of violence and Britain will be to blame for all of them. • "Lawlessness breeds lawlessness," said Dr. Silver. "It has led to violence, resent- ment, punishment, reprisal and counter- reprisal, to the creation of a Jewish under- ground movement which Jewish authorities are unable to control and to hooliganism on the part of British troops which the Pales- tine government seems to be unable to con- trol." * * * DETROIT 26, MICH. Semitism one tittle through the centuries. Let a great churchman rise and advocate the promulgation of a doctrine specifically branding anti-Semitism as a sin against God and against fellow-man and let such a dogma be incorporated in the canons of the church. Not until then shall we see the ebbing of the scourge of anti-Semitism. Neither we, nor Rabbi Rosenblum, we are certain, wish.to depreciate the zeal and good works of the National Conference of Chris- tians and Jews. We regret, however, that the Conference often appears to be speaking for a small segment and with no official authority. Social groups like the Conference are a blessing, but if anti-Semitism is to decrease, the church itself must lead the way with the beneficent step we advocate. Wald N." Suggestion to the Church next day for which aspirins In urging the Christian Church to de- clare hatred for minority groups a sin and to bar anti-Semites from communion, Rabbi William F. Rosenblum, president of the Synagogue Council of America, Feints the way to the church to help eradicate this unholy pestilence with more than words. "It will do more to destroy the age-old crime of anti-Semitism than all the polite as- surances of goodwill by creed leaders, which the masses feel, are spoken 'for reasons of policy,'" says Rabbi Rosenblum. We indorse this view most emphatically. Ignoring for the moment those sects which teach hatred overtly, we respectfully suggest to those churches which have in recent years liberalized their social viewpoints to declare canonically that anti-Semitism and kindred hates are mortal sins, contrary to the com- mandment of the Almighty that "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." * * * We say this with full awareness that the church proscribes hatred, enmity and perse- cution.
