MAN OF THE WEEK
TO SAMUEL 1 . 1!LAN, director of the Jewish Community Center's
Camp }Libman, educating and guiding Jewish children during
the formative stages of their lives is one of the most gratifying ex-
periences that a human being can have.
Not only has companionship with these turbulent youngsters
enriched his daily life, but while helping mould their futures, Milan

NEW YORK—A summer cam-
paign to provide a toy for each
of the 170,000 surviving Jewish
children in Europe was launched
this week by the SOS (Supplies
for Overseas Survivors) collec-
tion of the Joint Distribution
Committee, it was announced to-
day by Mrs. Isaac Gilman, SOS
National co-chairman.
The drive, under the leader-
ship of Dorothy Kittay who
operates a toy buying service in
New York, was initiated with an
appeal to manufacturers, whole-
salers and jobbers in New York
and other toy centers throughout
the country, Mrs. Gilman added.
Toys are essential for the re-
habilitation of surviving Jewish
youngsters, she said. The amount
of toys now available to the
children, she continued, is piti-
fully small and it is frequently
the case that scores of children
will stand in line to take turns
playing with the only available
doll.

Germany.
He said that since May, 1946,
when the JDC emigration ser-
vice in Europe began operations,
some 40,000 Jews have received
assistance M leaving for new
homes. Of the 15,000, 10,000 have
already reached their countries
at resettlement and the remainder
are awaiting transportation in
"waiting areas" such as France.
In addition,- about 60,000 persons
are registered on JDC rolls in 32
offices throughout Europe. Ap-
plications are being processed by
a staff of 250, 80 percent of whom
are former DP's.
