DETROIT JIWISH CHRONICLE

WOMAN OF THE WEEK Anti-Hate Laws

MRS. NATHAN SPEVAKOW S devotion to her people is an
inherited characteristic which rounds out an affable and con-
cientious personality. Brought up on an atmosphere where interest
in Jewish .problems was taken for granted, Mrs. Spevakow's early
training and education has prepared her for the role of leadership
she has assumed in Detroit's Jewish community.

A traditional Jewess who feels close ties with others of her
beliefs, Mrs. Spevakow is descended from a family which was
thoroughly Americanized. But
despite her strictly American
background. ever since she can
remember she has maintained an
interest in the welfare of her
people and in Zionism, two in-
spired drives which have become
integral parts of her life.

vok

"Troubled
world conditions
have actually awakened the Jew-
ish conscience," she said. ''More
people are taking an interest in
Zionism, and since the Jews in
Palestine are willing to accept
the responsibility for the Euro-
pean DP's, American Jews them-
selves have developed a feeling
of responsibility for these harried
brothers of

This is the observation of Nis-

July 10 before the city council's
judiciary committee in favor of
a proposed ordinance to punish
perpetrators of vandalism, riots

action on behalf of Zionism by various government agencies.
Mrs. Spevakow was born in Boston and attended/ Radcliffe College.
She received her bachelor's degree in music and her master's in
sociology. She is the only Jewish alumna from Radcliffe in Michi-
gan and is a member of the college's alumnae association which
is engaged in raising money for an endowment to the college.
She also attended Boston Hebrew College.

WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING the indifference many Jews show
concerning their own problems, Mrs. Spevakow asserted that - unless
the individual has the desire to be of service, it's a waste of time
to force him. But we- don't sit back passively and wait for that
inspiration to spring spontaneously.
"We start with a small nucleus, and these inspired individuals
spread out and incorporate the undecided fence-sitters into the

This pattern of community service which she has seen transferred I
from one generation to another brings results, but Mrs. Spevakow I
doesn't intend to force her children, Marvin, 15, Joan, 13, or Marcia, '
5, to conform. But with her husband active in Zionism as vice- ,
president of the Jewish National Fund Council, and with her own
numerous activities as a background, one can rest assured that an
effective precedent has been established.
