"That experience makes me
cautious, extremely cautious. I
could have dates every night if
I wished them. But I prefer my
own company unless there is a
date with a person who has
something to offer me, in con-
versation, in experience, in char-
acter .
"I would like a family and
children of my own . . . But
in the absence of a fine man to
be the father of any children I
have I can get my thrills of
parenthood second-hand, through
my nieces and nephews.
"Not exactly a full substitute
but still a satisfying substitute...
That's why I haven't married
again, though I would like to,

Failure to A(t lilt
in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS — Deploring
the state legislature's failure to
enact an FEPC bill, the Grand
Rapids Committtee for Fair Em-
ployment Practices Legislation,
representing 22 Kent County civic
organizations. including Rnai Brith
and the Jewish War Veterans, in
a letter to GOV. Kim Sigler con-
demned his failure to push con-
sideration of FEPC legislation.
Charging that the governor had
failed to keep a promise he had
made to the people, the letter,
signed by Franklin Wallin and
Abe Drasin. co-chairmen. said:
"In view of your campaign
declaration that you favored the
establishment of a Fair Employ,
ment Practice Commission, and
in view of your commitment to
the delegation which waited on
you on March 18, 1947, that you
were 'in accord with the idea of
an FEPC Act' and would 'act be-
fore the legislature adjourns and
before it is too late,' we felt that
you had given a distinct promise
to the public that you would use
your influence as governor to
have FEPC legislation considered
by our representatives before ad-
journment.
"Nothing was done. There was
no further action on your part.
We are rather astonished that
there has been no statement or
explanation by you as to why
you failed to carry out this com-
mitment," continued the letter.
Professing continued confidence
in the governor's good faith, the
letter noted that a special ses-
sion of the legislature was being
contemplated and expressed the
hope that the governor "may
plan this to be the occasion of
giving whole-hearted and militant
support to an FEPC act."
