The Voice of the
Man in the Street

Photos by JACK BIGELMAN

TIME: Thursday afternoon.
PLACE: Dexter and Waverly.
QUESTION: Do you agree that
virtually every American
Jew is at heart a Zionist?
MRS. MILDRED TORBY, 3825
Waverly avenue, housewife.

I don't believe that American
are at heart Zionists al-
though many of them are inter-
ested in the
movement. The
Jews in this
country a r e
very comfort-
able and don't
seem to worry
about other
Jews so much.
It is true that
they don ate
money and sup- I
plies to the Zionist cause, but
they don't actively participate
enough in helping to build a Jew-
ish state in Palestine.
The reason I believe-the Amer-
ican Jews are not truly Zionists
is because of their unwillingness
to think maturely about the prob-
lem or discuss it. Actually, in-
stead of fighting fof this cause
which is vital to every Jew, they
treat it as a sideline and only ,
contribute their time and money
when they are forced to.

Many Jews believe in fighting

for a place which they call their

own. They are tired of being
thrown around
a n d ridiculed
wherever they
go. In Pales-
tine, many Jews
hope eventually
to reach a point
where they will
b e considered
1 ._
as human be-
ings not unzit-
tached beggars.
. But the average American Jew
is not particularly concerned with
this problem. Sure, he has sort
of a detached interest in the
plight of his fellow Jews in the
otheryarts of the world, but he is
so remote from the trouble that
he doesn't actively engage in
solving the problem.

City Delegate to LOA Convention
Tells Reactions , in . Letter to Editor

Detroit Jewish Chronicle:

Dear Editor:

At Con f er puce

The Golden Jubilee Conven-
tion of the Zionist Organization
of America has come and gone.

I know that you have the
routine information as released
through the various press agen-
cies but for the sake of your
reading public I would like to
give you a few intimate details
about the convention, about our
own Detroit delegation and my
general reaction to what took
place.

YOUNG PEOPLE

Interestingly enough, our del-
egation from Detroit was com-
posed primarily of very young
people with most of them at-
tending a_ Zionist convention for
the first time,

Chapter 1, of which Harold
Weisman is the president, was
the best represented with a very
enthusiastic e.wl eager delegation.
Of course some of our old-timers
were there too, such as Maurice
Zackheim, Maurice Jacobs. Leon
Kay, Leon Fram, Phil Slomo-
vitz, Rabbi Levy. Walter Field,
etc.

WOLOK IS HOST

Charlie Wolok was the genial
host that he usually is on such
occasions . He had a very elab-
orate suite in the Pennsylvania
Hotel and we made it our con-
gregating place and no matter
when we came into his room
there was always plenty of
drinks and refreshments.

The delegation from Detroit
had held a number of caucusses
with the question of resistance
being always uppermost in our
minds. As you know, I stood
for the philosophy of more ac-
tive resistance because I have
always felt that the problem of
Palestine will not be solved ex-
cept by militant and active re-
sistance to the illegal mandatory.

BLOOD AND SWEAT

Our attempts at negotiations
with Britain, appointment of any
number of investigating commis-
sions, promises on the part of
Great Britain and even our at-
tempt to gain support from other
governments have proved fruit-
less in the past and I am con-
vinced will prove fruitless in
the future and that if the prob-
lem .-- of Palestine will ever be
solved it will be solved through
our own blood and sweat.

SEYMOUR TILCHIN

to obtain Palestine is by build-
ing another colony, by bringing
in more immigration, etc.

BETTED INFORMER

our younge4 dele-
gates were somewhat confused
and being honest with them-
selves did not know what the
true answer to the question is.
The result was that Nee had a
pretty well divided opinion on
the matter but regardless of
what opinion each delegate may
hold now, one thing is certain,
they are much better informed
and I think much happier for
it. . . .
The hottest meeting of the
convention was the session Sat-
urday night when the political
committee gave its report and
presented its resolutions.
I am inclosing herewith a copy
of these resolutions as they were
adopted on the convention floor.
The one that caused the greatest
furore and the greatest discus-
sion and almost mob-reaction
and mob psychology was the
one on resistance.

Frankly,

IRVING . KIRSCHNER,

.

The Americen Jews are *ch-
mated and like it here. They have
Americanized themselves to the
point where
people outside
of their own
country, even
Jews, are treat-,
ed with indif-
ference. There-
fore, I don't
think that most
of them
are
Zionists at
heart.
I personally know many Jews
who are interested in Zionism.
When I talk to them about it
they seem to support the measure.
But when it comes to doing some-
thing about it. even joining an
organization, they come up with
excuses.
