PLEA CONDEMNED
British officials sharply as-
sailed the UN committee for
cabling to UN Secretary Gener-
al Lie that he call to the Brit-
ish government's attention a
plea for commutation of the
death sentences _imposed by a
British military court on three
Jewish youths last week.
The British officials here said
the committee exceeded its au-
thority in making the requests.

ACCUSES BRITISH
Sir Henry Gurney, chief sec-
retary of the Palestine govern-
ment, wrote a chilly note to the
committee saying that the con-
demned men could not possibly
concern the committee at this
time because the death senten-
ces were not yet confirmed by
the top military commanders
here.
One of the committee mem-
bers, Dr. Jorge Garcia G4a-
dos of Guatemala dinged the
British may have timed the
death sentences with the open-
ing of the Palestine inquiry.
"The government has literally
smacked the committee in the
mouth," he asserted.

'Irishman' Heads
a Bnai BrIth
Lodge, Begorra

)

CHICAGO — Jack Mann at-
tributes his election as president
of Bnai Brith North Shore Lodge
here to the "luck of the Irish,"
.to less.
Mann was born in Dublin, Ire-
land and emigrated to the United
States in 1921. During his ad-
ministration as lodge membership
chairman, the unit hit an all-
time record.
His Bnai Brith associates claim
that Mann really gives out with
the "blarney" when it comes to
membership campaigns. But Mann
says that his Irish brogue under-
goes the acid test when he is
approached_ by a policeman for a
traffic violation.
The Bnai Brith leader was for-
merly a member of the St. Kevins
Parade Orthodox Synagogue in
Dublin. In World War I when he
saw four-and-half years service
as a volunteer in the British army,
serving in Palestine he was one
of the first Jewish soldiers to
enter Jerusalem.

LONGEST INJUNCTION

In the Oakland County case,
Najib Ferris, s native of Syria
and a U.S. citizen for the last
25 years, had purchased and was
occupying a home in highland
Township with his son, Dr. Al-
fred Ferris. The complainant
charged that because Ferris was
a "Semite'-he was occupying the
ftroperty in violation of the re-
strictions, and sought to enjoin
him from sbch occupancy.
Defending Ferris, Nay"r estab-
lished that the term "Semitic
Race" is vague and meaningless
and has no significance in a con-
tract conveying property. Other
testimony before the court re-
vealed that the complainant had
no concept whatsoever of the
meaning of "Semitic".

CITE PUBLIC POLICY

enforcement of such a covenant
would be "conscionable and con-

the effect of enforcement of such
a covenant would bring about
"that which the legislative and
executive departments of the
state are powerless to accom-
plish" because of constitutional
and statutory safeguards.

VIOLATES CONSTITUTION.

Concluding that a decree for
the complainant "would be in
violation of the Constitution of
the, United States and would 1.;•
contrary to the public policy of
the State of Michigan", the
Council asked for dismissal of
the complaint.
The decision of the 'court de-
claring the covenant invalid was
rendered by Circuit Judge If.
Russell Holland.
