Jewish Education

The low ebb of Jewish education in
America has long been a source of deep anx-
iety to all concerned with the problem.
And though increasing efforts have been
made by Jewish communal leaders and edu-
cators to solve the problem, the painful fact
remains that little, too little, headway has
been made in that direction.
We followed carefully the recent annual
meeting of the American Association for
Jewish Education in the hope of finding a
sign of an improved situation. But there
were few encouraging signs.
The association's annual report cited a
marked increase of interest in Jewish edu-
cation during the year, growing enrollments,
and an increase of approximately 24 percent
in the allocations of the welfare funds for
Jewish education. But that was to be ex-
pected. In the first place, there has been an
increase in the school-age Jewish popula-
tion and, secondly, the higher allocations
may reflect, in good part, the higher costs
of operation.
But the fault does not lie with the or-
ganizations fostering Jewish education in
America. The fault lies with the parents,
and brutal candor demands that our Jewish
parents be reminded that their aloofness.

Dr. Chaim Weizmann, elder statesman of
Zionism, is of the opinion that Jews outside
Palestine should not establish universities
in countries,of their residence, inasmuch as
there can be no substitute for the Hebrew
University in creating "eternal spiritual and
cultural values,"

ficance of the 'Hebrew . University in current
Jewish life, we feel that Dr. Weizmann's
opinion borders on the unintelligible.
While the Hebrew University has con-
tributed many noteworthy additions to the
human store of knowledge, it has not yet
convinced higher institutes of education else-
where in the world to bandon their dis-

What Dr. Weizmann evidently meant to
say is that Jews in the diaspora cannot
hope to create a university that could sup-
