STORY OF THE WEEK
ONE OF THE MUFTI'S hench-
men, on the hunt for cash,
entered the house of a chalutz in
a Palestine colony, but, after hav-
ing searched it thoroughly found
nothing worth stealing. As he was
leaving, the owner of the house
woke up and called after him: "I
say, please close the door as you
go out."
"I like that!" exclaimed the thief.
"For all the great riches that I
have taken from your house you
now want to exploit me and make
a slave out of me" ,
Mr. Saulson moved to Detroit in
1894 and immediately took an ac-
tive interest in Jewish communal
affairs. His sincerity and zeal soon
won him many friends. He was
a member of Congregation Shaa-
rey Zedek for many years while
living in St. Ignace and came to
Detroit regularly for the Holy Day
services.
On moving to Detroit he be-
came actively engaged in the af-
fairs of the congregation and
served on the board for many
years and as president from 1903
to 1908. It was during his admin-
istration that Shaarey Zedek be-
gan to lean toward the conserva-
tive movement and Dr. Abraham
M. Hershman was brought here.
Mr. Saulson was especially in-
terested in bring back Jewish
young people to the synagogue
and instilling in them a Jewish
_,.>: consciousness. He was one of the
WILLIAM SAULSON organizers of the Talmud Torah
and served as president over a long period. He gave freely of his
time and energy to the United Jewish Charities (now the Jewish
Welfare Federation) and was an enthusiastic supporter of every
Jewish movement. Ill health necessitated his retirement as president
of the Peerless Manufacturing Co. and a change of residence to
California where he died in 1917. He was brought to Detroit for
internment.
Mr. Saulson was married )in 1881 to Anna Reinhartz 'of St. Ignace
and they were the parents of one daughter, Ida (Mrs. Harry Lieber-
man). Their granddaughter is Mrs. Jack. Fogel.
