Sisterhood •tnai Moshe Awaits
Graduation Set
at Shaarev Zedek
A NEW AND ENERGETIC personality has been added to Detroit's
bustling Jewish community.
This friendly and business-like individual is Joseph Abrahams,
who recently assumed the duties of executive director of Shaarey
Zedek.
Abrahams will be in complete
charge of administration in the
Consecration Rites
Consecration services of Bnai
Moshe will be held at 10.30 p.m.
Sunday, June 8, in the Synagogue.

Synagogue.
Stepping out of a comparable
position which he held for three
years at the United Talmud Torahs
of Montreal, Abrahams brings a
welter of communal experience in
various fields with him. Although
his services have been confined to
Montreal and its population of
70,000 Jews. Abrahams' back-
ground of multiple activities
patently qualifies him for this new
position.
"Though my stay in Detroit has
been brief," Abrahams said, "I
have already noticed the similarity
between this Jewish community
and Montreal's. The problems
here are relatively the same as in
Canada and we have identical or-
ganizations to deal with them."
•
Shirley Reinstein will give the
opening prayer, and nine other
consecrants, Sally Grossman, Na-
talie Lipsitz, Helen Fish, Loretta
Lober, Edith Hittman, Shirlee
Stern, Elinor Simons, Eleanor
Weiss and Thelma Roth, will speak
on the "Effect of Palestine on
American Jews."
Graduation exercises fortwelfth
grade students of the haarey
Zedek Religious School will be
held in conjunction with the late
Friday services at 8:30 p.m. June
6, in the Synagogue.
Highlights of the service will be
the presentation of the floral offer-
ing and a special rendition of the
cantata "What is Torah?" Esther
Landau will lead in the floral offer-
ing and Sheila Meister will give
the closing prayer.
Edwin Ross Lewinson will de-
liver the valedictory address and
Suzanne Miriam Berger will pre-
sent the class gift.
Other members of the graduating
class are Leonard Irwin Baron,
Justine Leslie Bessman, Dale
Boesky, Eliot Charlin, Audrey
Cornfield, Irene Sharon Cott, Wil-
liam Shetzer Frank, Marylin Sue
Glasier, Sylvia Goldstick.
RN IN DUBLIN, IRELAND,
hams was brought to Mon- JOSEPH ABRAHAMS
treat in 1911 while he was still a child. He received a degree in
accountancy from Sullivan's College and a short stay at McGill
University studying English literature rounded out the traditional
program of higher learning.
Not to be limited in his intellectual Scope, Abrahams fortified
himself with a thorough background in Jewish and Hebrev7 culture.
He attended the Jewish People's schools for six years, and after his
Bar Mitzvah, spent two additional years at the United Talmud
Torahs, where he was later to be put in charge of administration and
fund raising.

ABRAHAMS BEGAN HIS career of service to Jewry at an early
age when he helped organize the Junior Congregation of the Young
Men's Hebrew Association, and for his efforts was rewarded by being
elected the first president.
He maintains an interest in Zicnism, and from 1937-40 served as
secretary of the Maccabean Lodge of Zionist Order, Habonim. Abra-
hams pointed out that Zionist ideals are supported unstintingly in
Montreal. As further evidence of his interest in this movement, he
was a member of the conventions committee of the Zionist Order of
Canada, and served on the educational committee of the Canadian
Jewish Congress.
For 10 years Abrahams served as executive secretary of a large
Synagogue in Montreal, besides being a member of the Lord Reading
Club, a social organization, and of the Knights of Pythias.
