HISTORY OF JEWS
IN MICHIGAN
IF
(Continued from page 3)
ther commanded me to kneel down
at the foot of the mountain, but
I said I wasn't afraid of anything.
I had freedom and nothing could
hold me and make me kneel down.
Moses came down from the
mountain with the tablets He said
to all of us: "I have the Law for
you. Morality, that is. You are to
live by this Law from now on that
you may have freedom."
"Says who?" 1 shouted.
"Says God," Moses replied.
*
*
JEERS AT TILE LAW
HE READ THE LAW from the
" tables: "Thou shalt not: Thou
shalt have no other God before
me . . . Thou shalt not kill . .
Thou shalt not commit adultery
. Thou shalt not steal .
Thou
shalt not bear false witness .
.
Thou shalt not covet."
"So that's law!" I jeered into the
ears of Ahiezer and Pagiel. "It's
nothing for us, fellows. Let's get
out of here."
Moses replied: "Your chains are
off but you are still slaves If you
are without moral law."
But I was young then, a fresh
young barbarian just starting to-
ward civilization. My untutored
youth is the only excuse I have
for my rude ways at Sinai. I was
just out of slavery, an unformed
human being, except for the crude
molding of the slave-master's lash
on my back. Please, then, excuse
my delinquency at Sinai .
But what shall be said of men
some 4,000 years later who, in
these times, still flout the moral
law of the Commandments, as I
did in my barbaric youth?
Men in the highest places of the
world who do as they please and
have come to no understanding of
the fact that there is no social
good for any one without moral
law among nations. Men'who, like
me in my remote youth, assert that
they can do as they like, to kill
by warfare, to steal the wealth of
peoples, to covet.
Yes, it seems a time for a uni-
versal revival of the Command-
ments, for a Shavuos that all man-
kind may celebrate in Commemor-
ation of Sinai.

CONGREGATION BETH ABRAHAM was organized by Austrian
4 -1 and (]m'e'an Jews and incorporated May 10, 1892. The charter
members were Abraham Barnett, Abraham J. Glickston, Abraham
Goldman, Joseph Burnstein, Abbey Dunn, Menasha Suvalk and Meyer
Cohen.
Services were first held on the second floor of a private residence
at 444 Hastings street, near Winder. The first Synagogue at 233
Winder street, between Hastings
and Rivard, was dedicated in
1907. In 1923 the congregation
moved to its second home at 433
E. Palmer, near Beaubien, which
was built at a cost of $150,000. The
congregation remained at that lo-
cation only four years.
From 1927 to 1932 services and
activities were conducted in a
rented hall in Jericho Temple, Joy
and Lawton. In 1932 the present
synagogue at 12517 Linwood was
dedicated.

BETH ABRAHAM was a con-
stituent of the United Hebrew
Orthodox Congregations of Detroit
during the early ministry in the
city of Rabbi Judah L. Levin. In
1915 the congregation called to its
pulpit Rabbi Joseph Thumim.
Rabbi Thumim was born in Aus-
tria, June 14, 1878, the son of
Rabbi Naftali Hertz and Faega
RABBI THUMIM
(Lieberman) Thumim. He received
his Jewish education under his father and his grandfather, Rabbi
Moses Thumim.
At the age of 22 he received his Smiehah (ordination) from Rabbi
Isaac Schmelltes of Lemberg, Rabbi Leib Horowitz of Stanislav and
Rabbi Benjamin Weiss of Czernowitz. He served for several years as
rabbi in Rosweelof and in May, 1912, came to the United States to
occupy the pulpit of Congregation Anshe Austria in Boston.
In 1913 he was called to Congregation Adath Israel in New York
where he served as rabbi until July, 1915. He was then called to the
pulpit of Congregation Beth Abraham of Detroit, a position which
he still occupies. Rabbi Thumim is the fourth oldest rabbi in Detroit
from the standpoint of continuous affiliation with a congregation.

WHEN RABBI THUMIM came to Detroit, Beth Abraham had
a membership of less than 200. Today the congregation numbers over
400 members and is one of the largest orthodox congregations in
the city.
Rabbi Thumim organized in 1915 the Ladies Auxiliary of Beth
Abraham (now the Sisterhood). In 1935 the Beth Abraham Free Loan
