QUESTION: Ilas the execution
of Dov Gruner changed your
attitude • toward the fighting
tactics of the activist groups
in Palestine?
MRS. EVELYN KARBEL, 2324
Calvert avenue, housewife.
As far as activist or so-called
terrorist activity is concerned, I
don't feel any different now than
I did before
Gruner's execu-
tion. I'm a
member of the
ZOA and have
long believed in
the nece ssity
for a Jewish
Homeland. The
only way to get
Palestine is
through fight-
ing and blood.
We can't be pacifists. We no
longer can humbly ask. We will
have to show we are really seri-
ous about a Homeland, that we
mean it, by action. I believed this
before Gruner was killed and I
believe it now.

regard to the UN, will be given
by George Weiswasser, editor of
the Detroit Jewish Chronicle.
There will be no guest speaker

mour Tilchin, chapter president.

WILLIAM S. SCHATZ, 3380 Col-
lingwood avenue. Retired.
I am not a religious man, but
I believe in God. I believe in the
Ten Commandments, and I be-
lieve we Jews
have to be loyal
to the Com-
mandments.
Above all, I be-
lieve you should
not kill. But I
oppose the exe-
cution of Gru-
ner. It is not
the Arab mas-
ses who are
preventnig u s
from getting our promised Home-
land but the British and Arab
feudal lords and capitalists. Men
like Gruner are patriots and they
must receive the full support of
every person who supports justice.

DAVID STtTLBERG, 17503 Prarie,
student at Durfee (12 yrs. old)
At first I thought their tactics
were wrong and I thought they
should try to settle the problem
peacefully. But
aft i the Gru-
ner execution I
realized they
had no choice
but to fight that
way, and now
I give them my
support. The
dishonest a n d
cowardly w a y
in which the
British hanged
him and broke their word to the
Chief Rabbi made me realize that
the only way the Jew can get a
Homeland is to support those who
are willing to fight for it.

Start as Singer in to Honor Citizens
Honored by Bnai Brith Miklos Gafni Got
Nazi Labor Camp
Miklos Gain!, 23-year-old Hun-
garian tenor who makes his De.
troit debut May 28 at Masonic
Temple, might never have become
a singing star if it hadn't been
for the Nazis. Gafni will appear
here under the auspices of the
Detroit Jewish Committee for Rus-
sian Rehabilitation.
Before the Wehrmacht overran
Europe, Gafni was attending me-
dical school. He was pulled out
of college by the Nazis and shipped
to a labor camp.
While there, Gafni received his
fundamental lessons in singing.
Ills teachers were three vocal
instructors who later were ex-
ecuted.
MRS. CHARLES I). SOLOVICH
was the only Detroiter elected
to a national post at the Bnai
Brith Women's Supreme Coun-
cil meeting April 23-26 in Wash-
ington, D. C. She was named
historian. Mrs. Soloyich is past
president of Pisgah Chapter,
Women's Grand Lodge No. 6
and the Michigan Council of
Bnai Brith and was the organ-
izer and first president of the
Women's Greater Detroit Bnai
Brith Council.
After liberation, Gafni went to
Budapest, where he was coached
in opera and appeared in "Travi•
ata" and "Tosca," creating a sen-
sation overnight.
He then visited Italy, receiving
instruction from Mario Terni and
SAM CHANESS, 4021 Elmhurst,
auto shop worker.
Most Jews, I feel, haven't
changed their minds because of
the execution. They expected it,
for they know
this is the way
Britain acts and
this is all part
of the fight for
a Homeland.
We have to
fight or else we
get nowhere.
The only way
we can get a
national home-
land is by sup-
porting the active patriots in their
fight. Gruner was fighting for the
right. I believe the Jews must go
on fighting and that just like
in the trade union movement, you
must fight to get something.

Time to Establish American Judaism
m a Synthesis of the 3 Branches
(Continued from page 3)
Sabbath observance and Kash-
ruth, etc., he should expect these
concepts observed by his parents
and his teachers. If he finds vio-
lation of them in the home and by
his teachers, we have produced
for him mental confusion.
If we send him to a conservative
or reform Sunday School and he
finds non-observance of teachings
In his home, we have again served
him confusion.
COURAGE ABSENT
IT IS TIME TO re-examine . our
beliefs, to establish firm con-
cepts of American Judaism. It is
time to implant these concepts in
our religious schools (of all domi-
nations) and to observe them at
home. Otherwise we will see a
widening gap between teaching
and observance.
We will see increasing indiffer-
ence to Jewish institutions and
increasing non-membership in our
synagogue. We will see uncontrolled
kosher meat prices driving our
young people to non-kosher meat
and very effectively eliminate
Kashruth.
Not a little of this gap, we
feel, is chargeable to that part
of American Jewish leadership
busy preserving the status quo
for want of thinking, for want
of courage.
The Julius Rosenwald Post of
the American Legion will sponsor
an outdoor "I am an American
Day "program at 2 p. m., Sunday,
May 18 at the Roosevelt School
field, Linwood and Tuxedo ave-
nues.
The post's friends and neighbors
who have reached their twenty-
first birthday will be sworn in as
full fledged voting Americans.
Preceding the rites, a parade
will take place from Dexter and
Davison to Linwood and the
Roosevelt field.
Persons interested in participat-
ing are asked to call Joseph Sha-
piro, Americanization officer, TO.
8-2808, or Commander Max Orn-
stein, TO. 6-3787.

WHERE ARE LEADERS?
MANY JEWS ARE non-affili-
ated. Others pay dues but do
not attend services. Others, at-
tending services occasionally, come
away disgusted with established
practices.
How many of these thinking
Jewish laymen (men and women)
believe our religion contains basic
truths, how many are ready to
synthesize their views on what
Judaism means to them, to at-
tempt a laymen's revival?
A prominent layman, a com-
munity leader, brought this up at
lunch. His congregational worship
was so full of mumbo-jumbo, with
so many mouth-filling words which
still left a spiritual void in him.
Ile wondered, too, if there
really exists the wide gulf be-
tween Jewish sects which all of
us are taught to believe. We
agreed that our individual con-
gregations left out much of the
values of the other sects.
He raised this question: Is there
room in America for American
Judaism? How long shall we en-
courage strife between our sects?
How long may each of us smugly
and ignorantly criticize the other
sects, taking comfort from our
(often mistaken) idea that we are
thus better?
Are we all so insecure that we
dare not examine our own beliefs
critically and perhaps enrich them
