Kielce Pogrom Chief
Will Not Be Punished

Surrenders to Polish Government
But Escapes Because of Amnesty

WARSAW (JTA)—Jan Ruczaj, the leader of a band
which carried out a pogrom in Kielce last year, in which
41 Jews were killed, has surrendered to the Polish authori-
ties. Although he admitted that he organized the pogrom,
he will not be punished because of the amnesty granted
by the government to members of anti-Semitic underground
groups.
Ruczaj was the man who kidnaped a Polish child and

Labor Zionists
to Canvass City

A goal of 1,000 new members
has been set by the Detroit Labor
Zionist Organization for a house
to house canvass Sunday morn-
ing. Mrs. Norman Leeman, heads
the membership drive.
The workers, drawn from the
seven LZOA branches, will start
from the new offices at 11816 Dex-
ter boulevard at 11 a. m. Sunday.
The following head the drive in
their respective branches: A. Born-
stein and A. Beitner, Branch 1;
W. Thompson, Branch 2; J.
Trompka, Branch 3; Dr. Abraham
Alper, Branch 4; H. Milinsky,
Branch 5; Norman D roc hie r,
Branch 6; Dr. Saul Stein and
Maxwell Lowe, Branch 7.
"These are days of decision
when the destiny of Palestine and
the future of the Jewish people
hang in the balance," said Morris
Lieberman, chairman of the De-
troit Central Committee. In this
emergency, it is essential that we
demonstrate to the world the de-
termined will of the Jewish peo-
ple to build a Jewish State in
Palestine.
"By joining a Zionist group.
particularly the Labor Zionist Or-
ganization, the American Jew as-
sumes his share in the struggle.
"We don't want a Palestine
which will emulate the social and
economic evils of the world, but
one which is founded on the prin-
ciples of social justice, equality
and personal labor, where every
pioneer fulfills his share of the
collective task.
"It is because the Labor Zionist
Organization program is positive
and all embracing that we invite
Detroit Jews to join with us."

HOLLYWOOD — Eric Johnston,
proxy of the Motion Picture
Producers Association, testifying
on alleged Communist infiltration
of Hollywood before the House
committee on un-American activi-
ties, propounded a choice tidbit of
logic which, I must confess, leaves
ine slightly puzzled.
Stating that Hollywood is losing
"hundreds of thousands of dol-
lars a year" by trying to show
its product in strongly leftist
countries, Johnston pointed out
that: "American films are the
target for bitter, organized at-
tacks by Communists all over the
world. The Communists hate and
fear American motion pictures. It
is their No. 1 hate. In most coun-
tries which are Communist domi.
nated, there is virtually a com-
plete ban on American films."
Then later, when asked by Rep.
Nixon (Calif.) if Hollywood had
every produced anti-Communist
films, Johnston hinted that such
films were in the offing. Now per-
haps I lost the gist of the argu-
ment somewhere on page Gimmel,
but to me it sounds very much
like Johnston is saying this: Hol-
lywood is peeved at losing money
in pro-Communist countries be-
cause the Communists hate our
films. Therefore, the best way to
make them like our product (and
thus recoup our losses) is to
produce anti-Communist pictures!
Neat trick, isn't it? . . .
Incidentally MGM is readying
"The Red Danube" for early pro-
duction as its first bid in the
anti-Red crusade. And Warner
producer Jerry Wald is planning
an anti-Communist film with a

picture, first of all must be en-

tertaining. But beyond that, it
must have something to say."
Now to my mind, a message
is something to say, but on the
other hand, the whole thing may
have been another Goldwynism.
Perhaps he meant massage. Come
now, Mr. Goldwyn—no message
